If Pearl did end up in Memphis

Luckily, Sam, I am no human. Therefore I look at things based on an optimistic point of view that we are immeasurably better off now than we were before Mr. Bruce Pearl.

Indeed. It seems as if we both transcend mere human existence. To infinity...and Beyond!!!

OldBlood,

First off, good post. I agree with alot of what you said. I just go back to if the anti-pearl people are so absolutely sure that we will never win a championship with him, why keep him around? It's not saying he should be fired, but it is passive-aggressively saying that there's no real point in having him as our coach, because the ultimate goal of any coach is to win championships.

I referenced a post-rock band and a Dave Eggers book in one fell swoop.

...trail of dead?

Anyway, if Pearl goes to Memphis, perhaps he's merely selling (himself) high. The SEC's about to get a whole lot tougher (particularly UK, Bama, Ole Miss, Miss St.), so for Pearl, it may be getting out while the getting's good. Two more fair-to-middling seasons later, Pearl's certainly not going to have anything close to an opportunity like Memphis, monetarily or otherwise. Now, whether or not I actually want him to leave, of course, depends on, y'know, who we gon' get.

Good points. Do you see anyone on the horizon that might come in?

The vast majority of pro-Pearl people on this site are not deifying Pearl or saying he is an elite coach.
The vast majority of anti-Pearl people are not calling for him to be fired.
He's the 3rd highest paid coach in the conference and not being paid as an elite coach. I love how both sides want to exaggerate the other side's opinions on Pearl to make them look bad. He's a good coach who's earned a few more years. One side or the other will be proven right based on his results going forward. And regardless of his system, he has to get better players in order to advance further in the tournament. Right now we don't have one player who could log significant NBA minutes (maybe Hopson eventually). Without that, you aren't going to go deep in the tourney.

In every thread about Pearl in this forum, you'll find a vocal contingent of guys saying one or more of the following exaggerated things:

A) Pearl is one of the best coaches in the country
B) Pearl is the only coach who can win at Tennessee
C) If Pearl leaves, we will never be able to hire another coach who can do as well
D) Pearl bleeds orange and loves Tennessee as much as any of us

This thread is aimed at them. I like Pearl too, but you can't say anything critical of the guy at all without some of these guys shouting you down and telling you that you're not a real fan, how dare you, Buzz Peterson Buzz Peterson Buzz Peterson. They act like a bunch of burly denim-wearing "chicks" at a Take Back The Night rally.

Dude, just because Bruce Pearl is one of the best coaches in the country, the only coach who can win at tennessee, bleeds orange, loves tennessee as much as any of us, and is irreplaceable... does not mean im wearing denim.

On a more serious note, i dont really think most of those are true, but I do think that he is a great coach and we will continue to improve as long as he is our coach. I'm not saying that we won't improve if we have another coach, but I see no reason to be looking for another coach while we have a great one here right now.

Also, i havent really seen many people saying those things in this thread.

Is there a "shout" button that I'm unaware of? This would really help me get my point across. Quit acting like a little girl that got her lollipop taken away from her. Its a message board where opinions are flowing free. You say what you want, we argue, the sun comes up tomorrow.

It's not arguing on on many of their parts, it's just fallacies and/or name-calling.

Haven't seen this posted, but GVX updated their story about Hamilton and Pearl with this tidbit from Memphis:

Memphis spokesman Bob Winn told the Associated Press he conferred with athletic director R.C. Johnson at approximately 10:30 a.m. Central Thursday morning about Pearl.

“To the questions of is he coming here to be interviewed and have we made an offer? No and No,” Winn said.

Yes, but there are opinions and then there opinions. Some of them are thought-out, and some of them are just knee-jerk sloganeering. Criticize Pearl's teams for not playing halfcourt offense, and nobody responds by arguing the point -- the response you get is that Buzz Peterson sucked. That's not debate; that's idiocy.

And in every pro-Pearl thread, the sarcastic snipes at him come out as well. It goes both ways. Don't put all of the pro-Pearl crowd in the same boat, just as you wouldn't want the entire anti-Pearl crowd lumped together. And realistically, those that criticize Pearl may not even be anti-Pearl at all - they just recognize some of his shortcomings. And you are talking about a very vocal, stupid, minority that says those things.

That is the same minority that this thread is talking about.

This is one of the greatest posts I've ever seen on VN

Sure, I can see how there are a few "knee-jerkers" out there...that sounded dirtier than I imagined.

If you want a sound and thought out discussion about half court offense, I may not be the best x's and o's guy to discuss this with, but I will try. It seems that Bruce Pearl has only had a couple of opportunities to mold a player into a true distribution-type point guard (Ramar Smith, and Bobby Maze). The fact that these guys did not pan out the way that Pearl intended does not mean his offensive coaching is flawed. It could be simply that these players were better suited to slash and drive rather than dish. It seems like I remember us having a pretty good halfcout O when CJ Watson was running the point. So, if we got another Watson-like player, perhaps the problem that you see with Pearl's team will be remedied.

There are a lot of bitter Fulmerites on here that have season tickets to the Lady Vols and think dunking should be banned.
