I have a feeling with the low expectations attached to Tennessee in 2013,8-4 would probably get Butch Jones SECCY. What do y'all think?

Not sure if that alone would do it a top 3 recruiting class on top of an 8-4 season would for sure.

Well, since signing day isn't until February 2014, I'd say he's out of luck.

I mean at the time which I think is entirely possible to keep our momentum up.

What gavol was getting at is that NSD is in February and SEC coach of the year is named in December so recruiting class will have nothing to do with it and never has had anything to do with the award

The coach that wins the SEC and wins the NC game will get coach of the year, most likely. That being said, I think many of you need to lower your expectations for this coming season. Tennessee is short on talent, and it is a rough, top heavy schedule. Butch will need some time to get things going.

I think it should if a school like Kentucky or ms st were to have a #1 class at that point in December why should the coach not get some credit?
Coaching is a year round job not just a fall hobby.

I have a feeling the media and whoever votes on this sort of thing is going to hop on Malzahn's junk. They have too much talent to not improve this year.

This, I would be satisfied with a 7-6 season.

If Butch goes 8-4 we will have a helluva 2014 recruiting class

If Butch goes 8-4 with this schedule and roster, they should rename it Neyland-Butch Stadium and somehow develop a statue of him that permanently levitates over the 50 yard line.

Someone on another thread said that UT should beat UGA and USCe with "this roster". Serious question; is the roster a good one? I don't believe that Rivals keeps such rankings (I usually go by pre-season, etc. rankings anyway). I know that QB is a position in question. What does the rest of the roster look like?

8-4 would be awesome, 7-5 would be great, 6-6 would be expected. Not trying to be a downer but we have so many unknowns right now.

I know UT has struggled as of late but in no way would I want a UT coach named coach of the year for an 8-4 record.

It would more than likely be Hugh Freeze if Ole Miss gets in the hunt and makes some noise in the west.

I don't understand all of the downplaying of the Vols this next season. Seems some posters still believe that Dools is here and that it was just bad players last season. Did you forget that the roster is filled with top 20 recruiting class players? The players did let down some after repeated losses, but they had no chance to succeed with the defensive scheme of Dools/Sunseri and with Dools inability to manage a game, a roster and motivate players. The S&C program produced size, but no explosivenss except with those that were naturally fast.

All that has changed with Jones & staff. Add in that we have the most proven, talented O-line in the SEC with the most experienced front 7 on D - I simply don't get the low expectations. The game is won and lost in the trenches. Control the ball and minimal turnovers on O. Stop the run, contain the passing with zone, and create turnovers on D.
