You are right, he was never taking the UT job. Coming to Knoxville only shored up the urgent offer that Lane and Haden made him on Sunday. We were not going to match that offer. Let's just say he may be the highest paid WR coach in college football.Sorry, no bolded hidden messages...
But I think this is being made to be much too big a deal. Tee has been in Cali for only a year. Stability is a good thing with a young family. Also, I don't look his family and think 'Knoxville', I look at them and think 'LA'. It was probably never a serious consideration for him, he was probably just being courteous and wanting to placate Vol fans. After all, I'm sure he would never read this board or others and know how rabid Vol fans were about him being here....right? So...
As part of being a good Vol, and in the interest of properly vetting the opportunity, he brought his family. A part of that vetting process may have been to drive around and see some things. In a car. Driven by himself. Which would require a car. Which he would likely...say...rent. Things normal people do, when being normal. He may have genuinely not wanted the red-carpet treatment.
So Let it go guys. Tee didn't want to be here, at least not at this time. I'd say he lives pretty well out west, and despite our love for ET, not everyone shares our enthusiasm for it. No offense, no slight, not turning in his VFL card...just the reality of being a young coach with a young wife and young kids. Relax...this too shall pass.
Agree but these coaching hires are causing a Continental divide among our fanbase.
Maybe we should have offered Tee a Virgin from the Southwest????
That would defintely open a new Frontier in how we recruit coaches at UT.
He would always be Allegiant to us if we did.
True. I think that would make him a Vol first, and an American second.
Ok, people...there was not another gunman on the grassy knoll, Bush did not have a missile fired into the Pentagon, Jon Gruden was never going to be our Coach, and Tee Martin was not treated poorly so CBJ and Hart could offer the job to someone else. Take your emotions out of this situation and look at it for what it is. The most logical explanation for the rumor that Tee was not picked up from the Airport is that he wanted to drive himself. He wanted to be able to discuss the city and his options in the privacy of his own vehicle. He wanted to have a vehicle to use after the interview to visit with his children. That simple.
Tee is not coming. He has a great job with an excellent program that recruits fantastic talent. He has never stayed at a school longer than 2 years. He has a great opportunity to make a name for himself out West. Kiffin is a good coach and will be around for a while (even if he gets fired from USC). It is possible that Tee and CBJ discussed Tee's future with UT and the issue of timing. Who knows what the future holds....but for now...For the love of Gawd....LET IT GO!!!!!
