I'm biased because I grew up in East Tennessee but I far prefer Knoxville to Nashville or Chattanooga, mainly because of the Smokies and access to hiking / rafting / canoeing. Tri-Cities area would also be ok but perhaps a little harder to fly out from.
I like the Tri Cities (other than it's where my heart still resides) because it's big enough to offer all the city luxuries I want, but it's so easy to get away from it. Watauga Lake, South Holston Lake and Boone Lake are all very close by. So is Boone and Asheville. Plenty of places to sneak off to, but plenty to do in the area too.
1) Chattanooga (called the Scenic City for a reason and tons of character/charm)
2) Knoxville (Big Orange Football and Basketball plus the Smokies)
3) Anywhere in East Tennessee in between those two cities
4) Nashville (Too much obnoxious fake country music for me, and the girls think they are way hotter than they actually are)
Is Charlotte on your list for any reason that doesn't involve racing? I really like it, but I don't know that I can say best Southern City.
Charleston, Savannah, Boone and Asheville are the names that immediately come to mind for me.
