Started mid-80’s and yeah…you’re right. Blue ribbon players were top 250. You’d find out how well you did in the PRESEASON mags for the next season…or in USA Today the morning following Signing Day. You’d look at the number in descending order on lists like Emfingers but it would have Maurice Staley ranked higher than Peyton Manning in the same class. There was no way to extrapolate how many STARS an Al Wilson garnered. There were very few camps in the off-season. That 87 class Johnny Majors netted that had the backbone of some of his better OL’s…like Patrick Lenoir and Eric Mays? Got poohed on because there was no TOP 250 Blue Ribbon quarterbacks or RBs included. It ended up being one of Majors best classes. There was more emphasis on landing the best all-state players in Tennessee and Georgia as well as Florida. When Fulmer started following services post 2000 for his recruiting strategies, that’s when we prioritized the Brooks and Donalds over the Patrick Willises. Fulmer was a closer but the chemistry obviously suffered along with the fundamentals.I started following this stuff in the late 80’s and there’s always been a rating system of some kind that represents exactly what 5 star, 4 star, etc. means today.
I’d say Ced Wilson and Jermaine Copeland were also in that top 250 range, but that’s no where close to a 5 star, which is normally for what is considered a top 30-35 player.
Teaming up with Jah Jarrett at Africa TechLess than 24 hours. Quote this and go on record with where you feel in your bones Tate is heading.
I still say Tennessee. What say you?
I think you misunderstood my post. I’m saying it WOULD still be a surprise if he chose Tennessee. Not that the element of surprise would be gone. OSU has all the crystal balls, all the momentum, etc.
If he chose TN at this point I think it’s fair to say it would be a surprise.
My take is Tate was set to be a Vol, but this last-minute push by OSU MIGHT have changed things. I think @matts42012 made his post over a week ago, and we all know the recruiting landscape can change in a moment. Hopefully Tate is still a Vol, but if he's not, don't play "bash the insider". OSU has been pushing hard these last few days. Hopefully Tate is still a Vol, but I think it entirely possible they've flipped him. We'll see tomorrow.
And if he doesn't pick us, we just move on down the WR board. Still plenty of good options out there.
Personally, I think it would be Tate's loss. JMO, but I think OSU is about to hit a little skid, and I think we are finally on our way back up.
Well….there we go. It’s OSU.
It was a website and the web was just starting to become a thing then. I just remember following Jamal Lewis and Cosey Coleman's class being recruited on there. It may have had 4 stars total instead of 5 also.Maybe. But it wasn’t universally followed or respected. Emfinger and Lemming were the go-to’s when you were looking for who to scout.
Austin Price and Ryan Callahan both gave less than encouraging reports last night. Not that it's 100% over, just that it wasn't looking good. Somebody posted Price's comments ITT late last night. Here's Callahan's again, Price's message was similar. If TRULY nobody has heard anything, please explain to me why this is a done deal to Ohio State?
Gotcha. Just confused where the indications and smoke has come from if he hasn’t said anything to anyoneAustin Price and Ryan Callahan both gave less than encouraging reports last night.
