‘23 IL WR Carnell Tate (Ohio State commit)

I liked the color scheme, and I was a fan of the two tone jersey top.

I was never a fan of the wide stripe turning into a checkboard on the pants, and I was glad that we nixed that detail.
They were as good as any uniform in college football. Hopefully they bring them back along with an alternate away jersey to go with the pants and helmet. A white jersey with Smokey gray numbers and an orange collar would be 🔥

not to bring it back to bailey, but i really don't understand why he gets thrown under the bus. he was one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in georgia hs history, and got dropped into a historically bad tennessee offense with freaking chris weinke as his QB coach. he hasn't done anything of note so far, but he had to climb out of the hole first. kid gets a pass from me.

and metallic orange looks terrible and cheap. and i hope tate is a vol.

i think that covers everything.

The man had a lot of things going against him
The HC
His position coach and lack of development
The locker room
The culture
The program as a whole was in a bad place

Does he have the tools to be a solid QB at another school absolutely but hes not ready for SEC ball.

Ehh, some guys have played the same way for years and years and it still works well.
The best coaches adapt their system to the personnel they have.
Ex: Hype and Hooker
Bad Ex: Jeremy and Sal forcing their 3-4 sets to work

It still hurts my brain to think about who was a head coach and clearly needed to be a head coach sooner.

Damn you, Pruitt.
There is some truth to that but it has its limits. Coaches recognize that they have to "adapt" their system but "their system" is still the foundation. Heupel was never going to put Bailey under center with a FB and I-back behind him. He wasn't going to compromise the speed of his O or some of the things he does to simplify routes to accommodate a QB whose strength is reading alignment and post-snap coverages.

How much do you think Heupel changed his system for Hooker?

I don't hate Bailey and never did. I think he would have been a good QB even 10 years ago in an offense like Chaney built around Bray. But the modern game doesn't seem to favor guys like Bailey even when the coach adapts his system as much as he can without abandoning it.

Ppl on this board would claim almost everyday he was going to transfer to the likes of Bama or Florida and we would regret it…I guess that never materialized

.
How is it throwing him under the bus to discuss the deficiencies in his skill set as they relate to UT's O and most O's across CFB? I don't think he's a bad guy or at fault for the toxic mess he signed into. But he wasn't the answer or anything like the answer.

Again, not knocking the kid but the demand for QB's with his skill set aren't high right now. If he had an arm like Milton with his intelligence and game savvy then maybe it could work even without mobility. But he doesn't. He's a smart guy suited to make reads in a Chaney style system with a good but not great arm.

I don’t think he’s being thrown under a bus. Just pointing out that he didn’t fit this current staff’s system and likely wouldn’t have been recruited by them due to skill set. Wish him well and hope he kicks a$$ at UNLV!

Id say Hype made some adjustments to get Hookers confidence back. Remember he was all but gone from VT before Tennessee called and got him on board. Hype hid his downfalls and showcased his talents and that led to the offense taking off the way it did.

Im not saying he reinvented the wheel but he changed a new spokes for sure.

Everyone is talking about Nico's impact on Carnell and reasonably so but I think when Kyler Kasper commits that's going to have a HUGE impact on him as well. Same position that has bought into what the staff has doing and would have 3 of the 4 (Nico, Jack, Kasper) committed and focusing on recruiting Tate.
So you’re saying Kasper is a lock? 😉

He had Arik Gilbert and Rickey White to throw to. He was a dink and dunk QB whose weapons made him look better than he really was. There’s a reason he’s at UNLV right now

Tim Tebo was a dink and dunk QB too and he made a pretty good living out of it at Florida. That doesn't translate to the pro game though

Tebow also was a strong runner, he always went forward after contact. Helped him deflect a lot of his downfield passing mechanics. GBO!

You always use what your guys do well. I think the playbook was initially refined for Milton. It seemed to take a couple of games after Hooker became the starter for it to start looking like "him".

I'm not sure how much Hooker's confidence played a big role in Heupel's decisions. He seemed to be the clear leader coming out of spring but CJH wouldn't name him the starter. Instead he brought Milton in then chose him as the starter in fall camp. I can't see how any of that was designed to help Hooker's confidence. Seems like it would have challenged his confidence.

I have read that a lot of VT fans were upset when Hooker lost the job and left. They thought there was favoritism. Hooker had good stats at VT. He completed over 60% of his throws with a QBR in the 150's with a good TD/INT ratio. Burmeister, his replacement, has never thrown 60% in a season or had a QBR above 140 for a season.
