Not disagreeing, but it's supposed to be fun to talk about. As long as we're looking at wins and losses of everyone, the unranked team we lost to last week has beaten 2 top 10 teams in the past 2 weeks. 1 at home and one on the road.

At least LSU is out after last night. Something (or some other team) need to beat them. I think the committee would let them in with 3 losses.

Let's accept responsibility here. We had our chance to kick the door to the rankings and playoffs down, but we chit the bed. We didn't take care of business and now these voters/committees will slam the door in our faces. We've got no one to blame and nothing to witch about. We got what we deserved. Live and learn I suppose, but maybe the next time we find ourselves in a position to control our destiny, we'll get off the damned bus and kick butt.

Exactly and there's 4 spots and 3 or 4 teams are vying for the last one. Plus I think it's the best way to make conference championships matter.

It is simple, if USC and TCU wins next week, both are in and they are the 4 along with Georgia and Michigan.

If one of them falls out, Ohio State is likely in since they have a better record. I think Alabama is sitting at 6 and is unlikely to make it in any scenario. Yes we beat Alabama but it was in Neyland with a miracle FG. We didn't necessarily dominate them.

Is the goal to identify the team who has had the best season or to make conference championships matter?

Who gets the 4th spot doesn’t really matter. We have four teams because 3 doesn’t really work and because of all the years where we had 3 undefeated teams under the BCS system.

I don’t think being a conference champ is enough.

Both. And the goal is to determine the most deserving teams and then the best teams. And the 4th spot definitely matters because it's still a playoff spot that someone gets to claim. And just because there are 3 undefeated teams this year, it doesn't make it the end-all-be-all for every year. Not long ago winning your conference meant you were the best team in your conference. Why should it be different now? Using all P5 conference champs gets rid of a lot of the controversy about this conference or that one being better and someone getting left out. And then you still have 3 at large after that or possibly more if the champ has 3 losses

I argue it the other way, this year is perfect for a playoff. So many teams have surprising losses that probably don't happen the same way if played again. Conferences are not in talent parity so overall records aren't great predictors.

Better to expand the field and end the discussion.

We got punked by 25 Bamas two loses were by a total of 4 points. We deserve to be where we are and lucky to still be in the top 10.

If we did, we would all be setting ourselves up for a major disappointment. TCU and USC win out and we would not have gotten the nod. We would have gotten dropped to 5 after conference championships. That is what I believe would have happened. Going forward with an expanded playoff selection, it is great to think about TN having a lot of opportunity in the future with Coach Heupel (sp) at the wheel.

Expansion is the only thing that will give other teams the ability to recruit with the elites. NIL isn’t the tool that makes things even out. The Megadonors will see to that.

You do realize some teams do get better as the year goes. No team rarely stays the same from game 1 to game 12. Teams might go up and down or steady improvement or decline.

You do realize that some teams get better as the year goes. Teams get better or worse they rarely stay the same. There are lots of variables, just because a team starts the season bad doesn’t mean they won’t be better later in the season. Teams have bad games and off nights. But Tennessee bounced back like the good teams do. And South Carolina has improved in the last month. The game isn’t perfect science that is what makes it fun. Look at 4-7 aggies beating LSU.Nobody can let their guard down in the SEC it’s a tough league. We are 10-2, we beat Bama,Florida and LSU in the same year. More good times coming in the future. Tennessee is going to be in the hunt from now on for awhile! GBO
