In Defense of Joe

Hats off to Squirell but Joe's year would have been more competitive if he had had receivers the caliber of Tillman and Hyatt.

Yeah, from what I gathered Dante Thornton and Bru McCoy were injured most the season so check them both off due to that.

Keeton gets open but man does he drop balls a lot. Give him credit for getting open and running routes and frankly, even with the drops, he was probably our best WR this year.

Squirrel White was a big disappointment. He looked like another Hyatt against Clemson and Vandy in 2022/2023 but he just never came on this year. He seems talented and a good ball player. I don't know the story about him.

Some of the freshmen didn't step up as well.

The play calling was very vanilla at times on offense as well and I wasn't sure why but there was something going on with the WR room this year. I am wondering if injuries were a major problem. The Offensiveline when through similar problems with injuries.

All I will say is it was night and day watching Nico at qb vs Joe. Mind you Nico is a true freshman. Joe was like a 6th year senior or something like that. Part of me wonders if the reason we didn’t see more Nico this year was Huepel protecting Joe and the program from seeing how much better Nico was than Joe. Huepel was determined to play Joe just like Pruitt was hell bent on playing JG. Nico has some things to work on but I am glad to see Joe finally gone just like I was JG! The Vols future is looking bright with Nico, Jake and the other QBs Huepel is targeting!
So 11-19 for 152 yards is night and day difference?

While it might be fair to observe there might have been hopes for a bit more Squirrel did lead the team in yards and catches. In fact he was #5 in catches and #8 in yards for the SEC. "Big disappointment" seems a bit much.

54.1%, 2317yds, 12TDs, 9INT, 317dsR, 9TDR

I'm very curious as to which individual performance(s) people consider bad, and why, based on just these numbers.

I think the Bowl game said what needed to be said. Nico showed he was more mobile than Joe which should surprise no one. He also showed that if WR's can't catch the ball you won't gain many yards through the air. We saw the same dropsies and lack of separation with Nico as we did with Joe which would have affected him that much more. This season gave me more appreciation for people like Jalin Hyatt especially. I thought mostly Scheme was getting him separation last year when nah.. it was him.

How many drives did we see stall out this year because of drops and false starts and stupid holding penalties? Dude threw 5 ints in 12 games. I clearly remember at least 2 of them weren't on him being a bad QB Given what he was working with he had an amazing season.

Transferred and did what exactly?
Where? Who was going to coach him better than Heupel?? He stayed for himself too. Don get it twisted.

If he had left, oh gosh, I guess that means Nico would have had to play!
That would have been just terrible!!
Looks like you have “LittleVol Syndrome”. Joe has more VFL in his pinky toe that you ever will in your whole body. Lay off little man.

I can see Joe getting a real shot in the NFL in an offense that is more 'pro style' than one that relies on a QB to use his legs to make or extend plays.
Teams like Atlanta, New Orleans, New England, etc. will give Joe a shot - don't be surprised if one of them takes him on a late round pick.

I will forever appreciate Joe and the role he played in our program.
Without Joe we don't have 11 wins last year and we don't have a stop gap, or bridge, from Hooker to Nico to hold the program together.
It says a LOT about the guy when asked where he went to college and he says Tennessee...zero mention of the 3 years spent in Ann Arbor.
Only way I would want to see him in Atlanta is if Arthur Smith is gone. Worst HC who started the absolute worst qb all year. People who complained about Joe too much should watch Ridder’s performances this year. Dude throws the ball more to the other team than to Pitts and London lol.

Sure is! You aren’t acknowledging the intangibles Nico showed. Pocket awareness and football iq was undeniable. Nico not scared to tuck it and run. Keyton also gave up on a pass like he has all year long that would have been a td. Nico had it on the money!

I might be off base her with you regulars but I want to tip my hat to Joe Milton. Definitely a VFL that gave us some good moments. Actually the only game I kinda hold against him is Florida. Joe was a good loyal quarterback that produced 8 solid wins. I wish him well in the NFL (like Dobbs) and thank him for his service to the vols!

Milton has never completed a TD pass while scrambling outside the pocket in his entire college career. Milton is like anyone else, he good at some things, and some things he’s not so good at. But one thing is for certain and that’s he truly gave every thing he had and wanted to be here.

I agree 100%. Not only that, Joe is a good quarterback. He isn't elite or one of the top QBs in CFB, but, I bet there are plenty of teams who would've started him over their current QBs. Joe had the misfortune of following an elite QB. Joe then had one of the best games of his career in the Orange Bowl last season and our fanbase (myself included) had some very unrealistic expectations for him.

JG would have been better in Heupel’s system than Joe and yet people still tear him apart. That’s the one that’s mean-spirited. JG got no coaching. As for Joe, he wIll always be the guy who ended the longest and hardest played football game I have ever seen by coming in for Hooker and sliding out of bounds to avoid a hit.
JG would’ve been better than Milton in Heupel’s system? I’m sorry that’s an extremely dumb take. JG went through several coaches and coordinators and was given several chances in several different systems. What makes you think he would be better than Milton when all evidence tells us the contrary?

Joe was great and a team player when many others would have taken his ball and gone home. Being a starting QB at a school like TN isn't easy.

I wish him all the best in the NFL. He did some really good things for us on offense and I think a lot of our offensive challenges didn't fall squarely on his shoulders. There were a lot of different factors that caused the offensive issues we saw this year including a revolving door at offensive line, a receiving corps that underperformed and officiating that consistently hurt us. Winning 8 games with that hand is a real achievement. If he had won the Florida game and helped us get to consecutive 10+ win seasons, I think we would all be having a very different conversation about Joe.

No defense really needed. He's limited in some ways much the same but to much less degree as JG. With some guys, reads and the flow of coverage and run lanes and field vision easily become second nature. Nico showed some of that vs Iowa. On two of his TD runs, he cut up into holes that had not been created yet. Milton has to "think about it". Not his fault. Just the difference in two guys.

Milton was a bridge from Hooker to Nico. He served the purpose of giving Nico time to acclimate to the college game. We can all speculate who said/did what but I don't imagine that the staff was overwhelmingly disappointed when Joe opted out. They may have even nudged him just to give Nico that experience. Many here want to take shots at him but when you step back and take a big picture view... Joe helped the program. His contribution will probably count more when we look at 10 years than 1. He got us from an overachiever to the guy we all hope sets a new standard for the future of Vol football.
