In defense of Nico

They need to pass block and Nico needs to settle down and stop forcing stuff and he’ll be fine.

4 seconds to throw the football would be nice too.

He’s brought some of the criticism on himself by doing things like wearing pajama pants during 7-on-7 tournaments and wearing sunglasses during Tennessee camps. He walked to the stadium yesterday wearing a cowboy hat and a skirt.

Why do some of you harp on some of the dumbest sh*t?

Who cares what an 18 year old kid wears?

You can criticize his performance but this is downright stupid to complain about it.

We paid him what we had to pay him to get him to come here. If we misevaluated and overpaid, that's on us. Not many guys in the history of the game have played the quarterback position at a high level as freshman. Those were always long, long odds. People are mad they deluded themselves into thinking we'd beat those odds. The collapse of that delusion doesn't need to be taken out on Nico. He can still be a very good player for us down the road.
But aren't we setting ourselves up again with Merk? He'll be fairly untested against decent competition when he's next man up.

Merk is sitting this year. If Nico returns, I suspect there will be an actual QB competition in the Spring if Nico is still iffy the rest of the year. Merk could, conceivably, win the starting job in the Spring. He'd be just like Nico.

At best, Nico stays at QB1 and Merk is still unlikely to get more than garbage time snaps and then likely against bad competition. He'll have another year but "practice isn't game time and you have to give him time......"

So we should expect next year to be "the good year" then the year after that "the learning year" then another "good year" then GM gets a "learning year" etc etc

This right here. I mentioned it in another thread, limit the mistakes. An incomplete pass out of bounds is much better when there’s nothing there than an interception or holding the ball too long and getting sacked with a chance of a fumble. If he fixes his awareness, we see a totally different QB.

Some of you are too stupid to comprehend a short paragraph
Yeah cause I'm the one talking sh1t about a kids culture and wearing a skirt. Maybe you should look outside your own culture before making dumbass comments. You know edumahcation if you have the ability

No. You just lack the ability to read something for what it is. I didn’t criticize him or his culture. You’re being overly dramatic.

Lagway had one good throw all night. The rest were check downs or open TEs in the flats. Quit reaching. Nico made plays with his feet but unfortunately we got called for holding almost every time.
Funny how many people keep breezing past your last sentence… not just last night all season Nico has had big plays called back that could really settle him down and get him in a rhythm and create tempo… he has to be better but we have to stop shooting him with friendly fire as well…

Stop with the "he did something Peyton didn't do" crap. Peyton played against Spurrier led teams and not SunBelt Billy teams. There is a HUGE difference there. Our Defense, Sampson and BAD Florida play calling won us this game. Nico had zero to do with it.
Those are all facts. Our defense won that game IMHO. Our offense kept giving Florida opportunities that our defense had to stop. Any other team besides Florida would have run up the score on us Sat.

I really hate all the hes a freshman and has only started 7 games line of thinking and excuses. It sounds worse every week. When do we stop? Oh its fine, hes just a junior and has only played 31 games.
I’m sorry you feel that way, but this isn’t fantasy land. He will get better. Much better.

He is just not playing well right now. The game seems to be too fast for him.

Can he get better - absolutely. The question is will he and when?
Think coach needs to dial up some jump balls to Brazzell and give our WRs an opportunity to help Nico. He’s being asked to make some difficult throws, which is fine. This is the SEC. But Nico is struggling and we have the tools to help him out and boost his confidence. Just lob it up and let Brazzell do the rest.

He looked good when they ran tempo. It's when they get behind the chains with dumb holding penalites or something else is when they slow down. If he doesn't fumble the handoff on the first drive they score. Heupel's MO has been that, get the ball rolling downhill fast then hopefully the avalanche ensues. I think most of these teams know our formations and what we run out of them so when they slow it down it helps these teams out. I liked the rollouts last night , need to do more of that. They have to run tempo for this offense to go really good and they're killing themselves with the small stuff that makes them slow down.

If Nico cleans up his decision making he’s gonna be a great QB. Throwing the ball away and a little more awareness he’ll be good to go. I was a little hard on him in the game thread, but I still think he can be a great QB. Take care of the football kid, let the run game and defense do their thing. That’s our identity now.
100% agree. I just hope he can put it all together before we face Bama.

In the last 20 games with these respective teams the Vols are 3-17 against Florida/ 6-14 against Georgia/ 4-16 against Bama. Did none of the three ever play a freshman QB in these 20 games ? Of these 3 schools, Florida, Georgia , Bama, which one of them did not expect their freshman QB to win games until the 2nd or 3rd year of play ?
