In defense of Nico

Can someone tell me why he is suddenly so inaccurate ? He looked very accurate in the bowl game and first couple of games until Arkansas. The misses Saturday on deep balls was not pressure related.

He’s just looked rattled to me against SEC opponents. Probably putting too much pressure on himself. When he calms down you’ll see accuracy again. Arm talent is obviously not the problem because as you pointed out he was throwing dimes in the first few games

If you want the glass half empty I’m not who you want to talk to. I’d prefer looking at Hooker and Dobbs as examples
Dobbs was 10 years ago. He was just always that guy. He balled as soon as he got an opportunity. Same with hooker. It wasn't really that he got better. They gave him his opportunity and he just shined.

sec versus non-sec talent. very simple. those games did not prepare him for the SEC speed.

$8 million reasons why he needs to deliver. If I don’t deliver the best flock of chickens, then my pay gets cut if I am below the average. That’s life. Arch is the same status, RFR. He delivered. He has to make quicker reads, stop staring down receivers and coaches have to design more roll out passes. Yes he is soft and goes down or out of bounds before the marker. Get the first down. We do expect a lot. We were promised a lot. Promised so much we don’t even have a backup that could come in a real game situation.
Who has Arch beat that’s worth a damn? He’s put up good numbers against bad teams. Just like Nico did.

Jackson Arnold (another highly recruited QB in that class) has already been benched.

When you’re expecting to get hit every play it probably doesn’t help. He hasn’t played well of late, don’t get me wrong. But I’m not sure who would behind this line.

Even behind a bad O-line there’s no excuse to take so many sacks. Even when he’s under pressure he has more than enough time to do something with the ball. There’s no excuse for missing 2 wide open deep shots in the 2nd quarter. When the opportunity is there he has to deliver.

If he was a normal recruit only on scholarship then he deserves time and patience.

If he truly is being paid 2 million a year he needs to grow up fast cause he isn’t worth that.

NIL makes these guys business decisions. Straight business decisions.

Would we have received as much hype as we have if the starter was Gaston Moore? Idk how much money Nico has made the university but he boosted recruiting and we’ve successfully raised ticket prices thanks to the hype so maybe he is already worth the $2M.

Raising ticket prices is the metric here?

🤦‍♂️

He obviously made mistakes. But he made a ton of plays too. That slant towards the end of regulation was perfect and the receiver should have caught it and taken it for 6. If that happened people would be losing their minds praising Nico. I’m glad he’s our QB and look forward to seeing his career here

Nico is a freshman. He has started 7 games, I believe. I like his upside and it not Nico's fault that the Vol fanbase and the whole nation coined him the second coming of the greatest QB in all of the history of the sport. He has settled back down to earth, has a lot of growing up and learning to do. I am confident he will, as he is a super talented athlete and very mature.
Some of the criticism is warranted towards him. I am tired of hearing people say he’s a freshman. He’s a redshirt freshman with this being his second year in the system. What did people call him last year when he was playing? There are redshirt freshman that have been more productive than he has. He has a ways to go.

what would you do behind this line? It’s actually impressive we are even 5-1 with a line this and Nico is still healthy.
I'm thinking, actually praying, that this group has enough pride and moxy to start bringing their A game to game day. They have to out desire the other guys and win those battles. Believing in themselves is a start. Come-on Cooper get these guys rolling.

Anyone watch that Arch Manning kid at Texas. He is not the starter, yet was asked to come into a game and start the next two for the injured Ewers kid. They didn’t miss a beat. It’s like he has started for two years instead of two games. Nico has started seven games….hmmm! A world of difference in talent.

Nico is giving a maximum effort....True, he has lots of room to improve on, but the young man stands tall in the pocket and does the best he can with the plays being called...When he connects on a few of the downfield passes, Heipel will hopefully open up his playbook to complement Nico's passing abilities...Until then, hold onto your butts.

Our best season thus far under Heupel was with a QB he didn't recruit, and didn't initially start.
His two choices, Milton and Nico, have both underperformed according to expectations.
Nico needs to grow up quickly, and Heupel needs to surround himself with someone who knows how to coach offense and manage a clock.
Otherwise, he'll find out pretty quickly just how nasty UT fans can be.

That's a pretty unfair statement. Milton gets a lot of unnecessary hate for a QB that statistically put up one of the best QB seasons in Vol history, despite losing 2 great WRs to the draft and a 1st round RT. Yes he looked bad in our losses last year (except for Bama, which we lost due to poor coaching). But he wasn't a bad QB by any means. Just because he wasn't a Heisman candidate, doesn't mean he underperformed.

As far Nico, he's had 2 bad games and 1 mediocre game to go along with 4 great games. And yet he is still 6-1 as a starter. Maybe the problem is that people are putting unfair expectations on a red shirt freshman with 7 career starts after everyone was calling him a Heisman candidate after 3 weeks?

So TX & TN have a common opponent, Miss St.

Arch's stats against Miss St: 26/31 for 325 yds with 2 TDs/0 Ints

Assuming Nico is of equal talent & football IQ then we should see similar stats for Nico on Nov 9th
