Indigenous Marchers, Covington Catholic HS, and Black Israelites preachers = a buffet of media mess

And your preferred solution is to abridge the freedom of the press?

And to do so would be to ignore the plain fact that profit isn't the only motive for biased reporting. Non-profit news agencies would be every bit as slanted.

But with significantly less of a reward for rushing tripe to press without due diligence.

Do you have financial interest in a news outlet, perchance?

Several, I suppose. I'm pseuo-syndicated, so I would prefer that all the news outlets that pay me stay in business.

Completely agree. The first amendment doesn't, in any way, protect the press from consequences.
But what is their real exposure to consequences here? What do you think the over/under on retractions is from the MSM on this story?

And then you have outright idiot sites like Buzzfeed doubling down on stupid after Peter Carr issues a loud and clear “nope!” I’d love to see a libel suit from that whole fiasco but I’d guess it never happens.

I've not even seen this on the news.. Anyone have some clips?

Seen what?
I’ll assume you mean “news” sources carrying the story. Jees... So I typed “Covington Catholic” into google and there’s plenty of info for you. If you like NBC it was the major one I saw first.

Kentucky Catholic school to investigate taunting of Native Americans

In an interview with MSNBC's Joy Reid on Sunday, Phillips said he approached the group of students after witnessing them going back and forth with a group known as the Black Hebrew Israelites.

Keep on pluggin I guess

If there were any actual consequences for false reporting, outright lies, and propaganda, Fox News would be sued into oblivion.

I don't know about "retractions" because you only issue a retraction when a story is completely false or fabricated. I don't think the stories here rise to that level. That's not excusing the terrible journalism on display. But there is a difference between something like the UVA story that Rolling Stone had to retract and the shoddy reporting on this dust up.

In this instance, the appropriate action would be to continue reporting on the story with the new information. They should do what they should have done before publication and get comments from the kids or their parents. And any outlet that posted or linked to the abbreviated video should now post or link to the more complete videos that are publicly available.

As far as consequences? A defamation lawsuit may be tough. The kids would have more of a case against the NA activist than against the outlets that simply reported a story from a legitimate source. But this will continue to erode convidence in the MSM. Newsrooms will continue to shrink as publishers' profits dwindle.

I hope I have this queued up to the right spot (~1:11:00), but this video makes it even more interesting.

Nathan Phillips got in between the Black Israelites and CCHS students, and in the midst of the craziness the students appeared to crowd towards him. I'm betting the jumping around is what moved the group forward, but I'm calling it unintentional. Phillips didn't back off.

I'd say Phillips saw the cameras keeping an eye on the two groups and decided to take advantage of a chance to get on some news clips.

As far as the students go, I tend to be conservative in how I act in public but it's no worse than anything I've done at a UT BB game. I wouldn't have disrobed on camera and done a really bad fake haka routine, but that's just me.

Crazy **** going on if you watch the whole video.

Those black guys were by far the worst ones there and there isn’t a peep in the press about them.

I've heard worse from the street corner crazies on campus, far worse. But yes, they got the crowd riled up well in advance.
