When someone called out whataboutism the other person was supposed to drop any reference to consistencies or standards. The purpose was to shut down debate.

Why are you trying to mitigate CNN's mistake? As a news organization they have a responsibility to vet the facts, which they obviously failed to do. And before you bring it up, yes, Fox has done it before too. This isn't about whether a network leans your way politically or not. Journalistic integrity has been tossed aside in favor of sensationalism and political narrative, truth be damned. It shouldn't be accepted and it shouldn't be excused. Agenda driven media needs to be stamped out, whether from the right or the left. It does not serve the needs of the public, which is what responsible journalism should do.
