Interesting critique of Joe Milton's progression by former Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton

I'm noticing some silence from a few VN posters who have gone out of their way to bash Milton every chance they get.
Bash him? No, criticism isn't bashing. He impressed the coaching staff SO MUCH WITH CLEMSON that they've doubled down and still say no QB has a better chance than another for the upcoming year. Until he can prove he can produce and not completely overthrow the deep ball, he'll be relegated to backup. One decent game that another QB AVERAGED against top 10 teams all year doesn't prove anything. Yea yea, But muh clemsun...no. All UT did was yet again out an ACC team that was overhyped during the season.

No I meant bash and that’s what a few people here have done for the past year. It happens. I’ve been guilty of it myself with guys like Hooker and D Wright. Some eat crow. Some don’t. It is what it is. But there’s no denying that Milton has had more that his share of haters.

If we Beat 5 home 1 road game
UVA
Austin Peay
UF on road
UTSA
USCjr
T A&M
and we are 6 & 0 heading to Gump land he will be on Heisman list even if his numbers are down. Why? ratings, here's how the movers & shakers think uhh HH is out nothing for us to gain on advertising $$$ for the invite let's put Bennett in the F4 it will help our pocketbook need as many F4 team players on the invite. Yep, that's the ticket now let's go smoke another cigar and keep on being fat & happy...
In all seriousness USCe and A&M could be really good teams next season. Don't sleep on those. Rattler seemed to get the light on end of season and Jimbo has brought in a lot of talent down there... Not saying they will be but it would not surprise me of both of those are 9-10 win programs next year.

Check out his season totals. Threw for dang near 1,000 yards and had 10 TD’s to no interceptions. You can put your head in the sand, and act like 2022 Milton was the same as 2021, but he wasn’t. One bad game at Vandy in the windy, cold, rain shouldn’t skew your opinion of him. Because out side of the worst weather you can throw a ball in, he was more than solid all year.

Part of being a public figure. You get the good with the bad.

When you're playing 1.5 to 2 quarters a week, you better ******* throw for NO LESS than a grand, and should be closer to 1500 in our offensive scheme. People act like he's the second coming of Manning, yet the guy only got the job back due to injury and isn't promised it with a freshman QB coming in that got reps in the bowl practice. That tells us the coaching staff sees something in Nico, and he very well may earn the starting position next year.

one thing I think he needs to work on is pocket presence and when he pulls back and turns his body, he somewhat becomes a statue for too long... not able to dart as fast when he's about to get tackled

If I could make the letters in this post stand and applaud you, I would. The mark of a quality person is one who can testify of his own wrongs or failings, without excusing it. Not that any of us are perfect, but you can't really hide quality of character.

Of course, some will misinterpret your comments, ignoring that you're saying rather than just criticizing, they engage in a constant barrage of direct attacks against our QB. But for the nonce:

FTR 3 weeks ago on A-Z Sports Nashville Crompton insisted coach Heup reach into the portal for a top 1-yr transfer QB.

Post Orange Bowl Crompton has done a complete 180 on Milton. Same for me.

This is Milton’s team now win lose or draw in 2023. Exciting year ahead!

Strong backer of Joe Milton and CJHs decision to obviously stick w him in Orange Bowl. Crompton also a supporter and not sure why so many VN fans wouldn't give Joe, our best backup QB ever at UT, more respect going into Orange Bowl. My belief in him and not so much of Kluperhicker is very much behind my closest to the winning score of the Orange Bowl. Joe has amazing talent and Klubernicker showed that he really is just an average backup QB. I hope Nico Suave and JMIII room together this year and really work towards the good of the team. If that happens, we will have another stellar year in Ktown,

I will say this. It looks like he trying to control his power. He’s not over throwing like he was. Not sayin he still isn’t but gotten better. If he gets it together he can be a beast

Coaching staff says otherwise. QB1 position is not decided, per them, until week 1.

Here are some interesting tidbits from an article that advances similar conclusions:

… “Then Heupel got a hold of him for 15 bowl practices, and Milton’s world changed. Because that’s really the only way to describe the acute metamorphosis from a guy seemingly headed to the transfer portal again (while Vols fans pined for 5-star recruit Nico Iamaleava), to an impressive, affective and — here’s the key — consistent threat in the passing game…. He was so good, the idea now that Iamaleava — and his reported million-dollar NIL deal — will start in 2023 is almost laughable. He’ll compete with Milton, but if Milton made a significant jump in 15 bowl practices (and a week of practice as the QB1 for Vandy), what will he look like after 15 more practices this spring and an entire summer of work?” Hayes: Joe Milton III’s future at Tennessee? ‘Freaky bright’

So the author thinks it's laughable, despite our coaching staff saying Milton hasn't proven himself enough to capture the starting job for next year? Gotcha....

If you're making a valid point you better not ******* exaggerate.

He didn't play anywhere near 1.5-2 quarters/week. In 7 regular season/bowl games, he was 52/83 passing for CMP% of 64.6 and AVG 11.8 yards. Hooker was 229/329 for CMP% of 69.7 and 9.5 AVG. To get to 1500 yards Milton would have had to AVG 28.3 yards per reception. Milton finished with a rank of 204, nearly 30 point higher than Hooker. See the crazy in your post yet?

Milton has practiced with first team and started two games, and the 1st team QB is gone. No coach in their right mind names a starter in that situation. If Nico is starting next year, it's likely our season has taken a bad turn.

Yeah, that's usually how it's done when your starter is gone and your backup has two starts. You go through spring/summer camps and name your guy in the fall.
