Invitation to USU Fans

The coaches even said that the safety spot is wide open right now and the incoming freshmen will push for the starting spot. It was in one of Butch's after practice interviews IIRC

On what ability are they basing this off of?

Their cover skills on 16 year old WR that are working at Bilo right now?

I can only assume they're basing their opinions on the perceived abilities of 2 (TKJr & McDowell) of the higher rated safety recruits in the country? To replace a kid who appears to be a weak link in the secondary? You'd have to ask them. But it appears to be a consensus opinion by guys who have a little better access to accurate information about the program than either you or me.

Maybe Butch knows that both TKJr and Cortez actually covered more talented kids who worked and Kroger or Publix rather than the scrubs who work at the Knoxville-area Bi-Lo, making them more ready to play safety at the D1 level?

TKjr played in Ktown...i dont get ur metaphor

Sounds like Malone lives up to his 5 star rating........ Not going to lie, if what you're telling me is true, than that match-up scares me the most.

No worries Freak, I was not offended. Sorry if I came across the wrong way.

Another question for VolNation: How's your secondary looking? Our receivers look like they are going to have a breakout year, especially Brandon Swindall. Not to mention that Chuckie Keeton has been officially cleared to play. However, I have no idea what your secondary is capable of. Do you think this will be a good matchup?

What should really scare you is that your talkin bout being scared of our third best receiver.

Randolph has his spot all but locked up. McNeil, if he could get a little faster this offseason there's a good chance he might be the starter this season. Either way it's going to be fun to see how it turns out.

It would be nice if u could elaborate without getting snippy for no reason.

Apologies. It was a bit of a joke. Kinda difficult to elaborate without the context of previous posts.

Bottom line is the poster I was originally responding to thinks its absurd to believe a true freshman is gonna beat out McNeil at safety because, according to him, they've only been "covering 16 year old (WRs) who work at Bi-Lo".

I disagree based on what I've heard a lot of guys close to the program say.....all believe either TKJr, McDowell or even Gaulden will be the other starting safety alongside Randolph.

UT's WR's vs USU's DB's is the critical match up in the game. Otherwise, I could probably buy some of the arguments that USU will make a close game of it. Pound for pound. Step for step. You simply don't have the DB's to cover UT's WR's. The TE position for UT should be improved in receiving. Lane has always been a good receiver out of the backfield and now has other good receivers with him at RB. Your safeties and LB's will have to cover those guys rather than giving alot of help outside.

If UT is 3 wide with a TE then doing that isolates your CB's on UT's WR's. You'll have to cover RB's and TE's with safeties and LB's.

UT runs the same kinds of screens that have helped you succeed. If you are in a blitz when UT runs one... all your guys will see are big gainers.

You have a new DL, correct? I know you are proud of your LB's. They may be a very good group. UT plays against future NFL LB's practically every week. You keep trying to act as if USU brings something that UT has never seen before... you don't.

If you play alot of man coverage... it will be an ugly, ugly game for you.

That Auburn team scored its second highest total for the season against you. Only UVA gave up more points to them in their bowl. They only scored 26 ppg for the season.

UT is more than likely better than that Auburn team was at that point. At the skill positions in total... UT is probably ALOT more talented.

Yeah, what he said! :). SJT you left out the part where Lee was also injured when he played them.

Oh I gotcha. I thought u were talking about level of play in knoxville. Thats why I brought up TK being from knoxville. I see now its more of an age argument.

McNeil could step up considering he will be a JR, but im with u. I think it will be a FR, or they will at least get PT.

Actually, the guy I was responding to was indeed kinda dogging the level of play in Knoxville. I was arguing that both TKJr and McDowell are highly ranked 4 star safeties expected to be very good D1 players and that, according to a lot of guys that should know, one or both are expected to relegate McNeil to special teams this year.

He'd still be the same player. The nfl ranking isn't based on his easy SOS. Bobby wagner is seeing how he does against top talent every week. He's doing fine.

Big whoop about being the leading tackler. He plays the position that gets the most tackles on the entire field. I assume you mean AJ Johnson and by the top tackler you mean 5th.

Ever eat your own butt??? Maggitt gonna make you eat it!!! AJ gonna make you swallow!!! :aggressive:

All those Polys on the Hawaii team were really tough last year. Ask Army ...... but only Army

Love your avatar ( sort of jealous too) now, them Polys, football disallows clubbing and hacking with spiked weapons. I suspect, USU, BYU, and others who recruit Polys actually coach them to play football. I'm not sure about Hawaii. Further, wrong as I might be, I think the Mormon folks get the bulk of their Polys from a purer stock of Maori, Samoan, Niuean, Tongan, and maybe some Tahitians and Tuvaluans. Hawaiians are so diluted genetically and culturally they're mostly just tourist bait now. the real Poly still exist in other locations.

Correction and re-education from knowledgeable USU fans is welcome.

Virtually nobody believes McNeil will start at safety from what I've been hearing and reading. A true freshman, either TKJr or McDowell, maybe even Gaulden will start opposite Randolph. If McNeil's gonna decleat anybody it will more than likely be on special teams IMO.

My understanding is that while not the perfect fit, LM has a nose for the ball and de-snots almost everyone he tackles. And you don't want him on the field?

The level of play isnt that great in east TN altogether. With that said, that doesnt mean it doesnt produce a few good players. Brandon Warren, Randall Cobb, Aaron Douglas, Dennis Rogan, etc.

TKjr is definitely one of those kind of players.

Your point fails due to the list of players you chose to make said point. Examples like Chad Pennington and Cobb are what you need to point out. Heck, I'd use Todd Helton as an example before I'd point out Dennis Rogan.

DeRog was kind of dumb to do the early exit he did.
Wonder where he ended up?

Rogan was a great kick returner and started 2 years at CB. Warren was a freak of an athlete but his mom was sick and he made a few poor choices. I already mentioned Cobb. Aaron Douglas started as a freshman.

Didn't say that. Like I normally do, I'm reporting here what I've heard/read from numerous sources who are either close to the team (eg, Ainge, Swain, Matthews) or report on/cover the team (Hubbs, Brice, etc). My personal opinion is that we need a better safety next to Randolph than what McNeil appeared to be last year. It's their collective opinion that one of the talented young freshmen will overtake him.

Well looky here....another source for you. Chris Low of ESPN....

NCAAF Tennessee spring wrap - ESPN

3. Safety help: Safety has been a problem the last couple of years for the Vols, as too many times big gains have turned into bigger gains and touchdowns. Junior Brian Randolph is going to need help, and that help probably will have to come from a trio of freshmen who haven't arrived -- Rashaan Gaulden, Todd Kelly Jr. and Cortez McDowell.

what?
