iPhone vs. Droid

because if the s3 is just $99 then **** apple

If your contract is up and you are due a new carrier subsidized phone, then you probably could get a really good deal like that for an S3. If you didn't have to have it tomorrow, the iPhone vs. Android thing boils down to price, familiarity with the OS, where the majority of your information and applications ($) are, and what you want out of a phone.

If you like the walled garden with little room to tweak (without a jailbreak), then waiting for the new iPhone is probably your best bet. If you enjoy tweaking and having the freedom to truly make the phone yours (with or without root), then an Android device is your best bet. If you could go either way on those things, you probably wouldn't go wrong with either option.

Personally, I would go with Android 100 times out of 100 for a variety of reasons; but not everyone wants the same thing in a smartphone that I do.

thanks for the help man. I more of a music guy and sports stuff on my phone. I think ill go with an android to avoid spending so much money on music. I am due for an upgrade as well.

im getting a phone tommorrow because my old one gave out on me yesterday. I thought the iphone 5 was still a week or two away from releasing, plus i would have to deal with the whole back order crap. By the way, is the S3 really just $99?

The new iPhone will be released next Friday the 21st but the keynote where they announce it is tomorrow. I may stand corrected on the S3 but could've swore I saw it has dropped to $99 when the new iPhone news came out. Of course $99 will be the subsidized price with an upgrade or new service & 2 year contract with either.

Wait... You like music so you purposely want a device that will make it more difficult to buy it? There is Google Play which isn't too different from iTunes except its more of a pain to get on your other devices (computer).

I'm a Apple person but I never buy music from iTunes. I use Amazon mostly because they tend to be a couple dollars cheaper but I also don't like how purchases from iTunes are in Apples mp4 format. After purchasing from Amazon on my Mac it automatically downloads to my iTunes library. I use iTunes match so then it's available to download to my iPhone or iPad via iCloud.

I've bought from google play before but it doesn't automatically download it to your computer. It just stores it in the cloud where you can play it through the web browser. If you want it on your computer for offline play you have to manually download it then upload it to your music library. Pretty inconvenient.

IIRC, Amazon has its own MP3 app for Android (no clue if it does for iOS) if you buy everything from there. At first, I thought Google Music would be a hassle with everything in the cloud, but since the actual MP3 files are spread out over a couple of different PCs and a couple external drives, when I'm at my main (or other) computer I just listen to my collection (playlists) via Google Music.

It took a little getting used to, but I really like it. I just set up music manager to monitor the folders which contain my music, and I've got my collection wherever I go (and have network connectivity, haha). It's probably not up to par with iTunes match at this point, but for those of us who don't like iTunes and prefer Android to iOS, it's plenty good.

Also - if you want the music on your device locally, you can always just drag/drop media files from your PC to your Android device (no need to worry with syncing).

Interesting that after news about Apple cutting orders for iphone5 it turns out they gained market share in the US.

Apple reigns as chief U.S. smartphone maker | Mobile - CNET News

I just dont see this 53% Droid users. Where are they? Do they just sit at home customizing their phones all day? In my personal experience of family, friends, casual acquaintances, and even observing strangers out in public its easily 5:1 ratio of iPhone:Droid. Even the Samsung GSIII for instance is a rare sight (FTR I think it's an awesome device).

I see way more iPhones than Droids with my co-workers

A large portion of the world's Android users are outside of the US. As far as your 5:1 ratio, it really depends on where you are. Some offices are almost all iPhones whereas others are dominated by Android devices; much of it also depends on the nature of the office (tech/geeks or business types). The same goes in public settings; if you are in a mall or similar place, you're likely going to see a lot of young people (18 and under), and that demographic is more likely to have an iPhone than Android.

I've often wondered why anyone cares what type of phone someone else has and why they try to sell them on getting one like theirs. I have an iPhone and love it, but couldn't care less if someone else has one.

the link is about the US

Yes, that's why after stating that the majority of the world's Android users are outside of the US, I suggested that the reason they don't see many is because of context (location/situation) rather than them not existing. I guess I could have been more clear, haha.

yeah that's it

most don't root/customize at all. You act like that's all you can do with an Android phone

You are right - many Android users do not customize much or at all. Stock Android has caught up to - if not surpassed - iOS in ease of usability, and 'just working'. Some manufacturer's skins offer some additional benefits in this area as well.

That being said, there are plenty who do root, ROM, and customize to their heart's content (I'm a ParanoidAndroid 2.9+ man myself). I don't have a strong Java background, so I backed an (Java-based) Android-specific dev course on Kickstarter a while back, so I plan on spending some time using that to catch up and do a little of development in my spare time.

I'm not going to lie, I like people close to me to have iPhones because it makes sharing easier via iMessage group texting and photo streams. Sure I could just use Facebook for alot of that but I'd rather not.

That makes total sense, but I was leaning more towards complete strangers on the internet

Not at all. I was just making a joke. I'm well aware of the capabilities of Droid devices but that is the feature many Droid users point to. Last fall I was talking to one of the few friends I had that was using a Droid who told me he liked how he could customize it. I asked what exactly and he said "well i can...." then paused before finishing with "actually I don't really do any of that." He switched to iPhone over Christmas.

I just find it odd that I don't personally witness the 53% market share. Granted I'm not keeping a running tally but noticing what phone someone is holding is one of those weird things I actively observe.

FTR I'm glad Droid exists. iOS is not perfect (that's why I jailbreak) and Droid forces Apple to keep innovating/keep up.

that's probably because you don't witness the cheap phones also running android. Of course people notice the flagship models like the Note or s3 but every cheap smart phone you see is likely running some version of android. The OS distribution tells me there are lots of old phones out there considering over 50% are on GB or earlier

I see your point. Speaking only for myself, I am not trying to sell anybody on switching. It just makes for good time wasting discussion.

If you don't have an iPhone than f*** you!

(You have one so you're cool in my book :) )

Could be. I've noticed the prepaid ones at Kroger that look like black berries run some version of Android.

Even still, you would think the GSIII would be more prevelant though considering it took over the top spot briefly before the iphone5 came out.

Recently started managing a cell phone outlet, and I'd say this is a pretty accurate assessment. I still see a lot of older android platforms, and a lot of last gen phones like GSII get moved for free-$20.

Granted the same thing happens with iPhone 4 but its not quite as common.

I'm beginning to get tired of itunes jacking around with my playlists every time I have to do an upgrade. Seems like with each successive itunes upgrade, I'm either losing a few songs here or there in my playlist or something. I haven't bought that many albums from the itunes store (maybe 15-20), but I'm ready to go full Android. I'm just concerned I may lose all of the music I bought on itunes. Will I still have access to my itunes purchases if I try to switch to a Android player?

I'm sure there is a way to convert with an app or using a home computer. The long way would to be just downloading all the songs you want on android for free with all the various apps out there. Do a quick YouTube search and I'm sure you'd find a way.

Yes. I use iSyncr. It allows you to sync playlists from itunes onto your android. The basic version is limited to one playlist and 100 songs. Buying the upgrade removes the limitations.

It involves an app for your phone and a program for your computer. You can then either sync through your home's wifi or a direct connection with your computer.

If you like the album artwork, it transfers those too.
