That doesnt sound like they are not going to make an X model. You just wont be able to get last years version at a reduced price like they have done in the past. The design of X is the way going forward. By 2020 the model design of the 6-7-8 will be the new SE.
They did the same thing with the Watch Series 2 when the Series 3 came out because the difference between the non-cell S3 was minimal to the S2. They didnt want people just buying the S2 to save $50 so it was discontinued. But you can still buy the lower end S1 which is missing a few key features like water resistance and wi-if.
