Not sure how you can even lose your contacts. The S4 is about to come out.

They are backed up but this is the 4th time it's happened and it's beyond annoying having to wait for it to restore. If I'm not satisfied after I take it to the Apple store, hello Android!

Are they backed up in iCloud?

I've restored my iPhone and iPad to factory a couple times each and have never had a problem with contacts repopulating.

Really? My battery generally lasts the whole day unless I'm playing a game or something. I don't "back up" to iCloud but I let it push all the other settings (mail, contacts, calendar, ect). You can set what it pushes. Just run your contacts and turn everything else off.

Personably I run everything because I like my 3 devices to be in sync. If you don't have any other apple products I can understand turning it off though.

What's the best way to protect myself in event of a crash? I don't want to pay for a lot of apps only to lose them later.

I like Pdanet for tethering. BiteSMS, 3G unrestrictor, Bulletin, Springtomize, SBsetttings, Forcast, Barrel, Zeppellin, Winterboard, iBlacklist (block text,calls, etc from numbers) & accellerate are a few to check out & good starters. Some are functional & some are just customizing tweaks. Everything you purchase you will be able to recover at no charge. There's sources you can add for cracked (free) versions of apps too. You can add sinfuliphonerepo.com to your sources but I'll leave that up to you.

Usually if something happens that's jailbreak related the phone will just go into safe mode & you'll know because it will say it in your status bar. You can tap it & restart & everything will be fine if not then you have a tweak or something that you usually just downloaded that isn't compatible or is conflicting with something else. Deleting will clear it up. If it just freezes all I do is hold the lock & home button until the apple logo appears & it reboots.

I go back and forth on the idea of jailbreaking. I'd like to have BiteSMS though.

Nothing to lose if you have a backup. Even biteSMS is customizable.

I like activator. You're able to customize actions for whatever function you want. When I triple click the home button, I get a pop up that gives me the option of toggling wi-fi, bluetooth, and brightness controls. And that's not even scratching the surface of what you can do with it.

You can do it by swiping down the notifications too to access SBsettings. Bulletin allows you to do it from the lockscreen.

I love my jailbroken 5

i use NCsettings all the time. It allows you to customize your notifiaction screen to control wifi, volume, hotspot, and prolly 10-15 other things

I also use cardswitcher for multitasking, which shows a card for each app open. it flows just like webOs for those that have had HP or palm products

also I have activator for things like flashlight, appkill, respring, camera, weather, etc

Once you do it and get used to the added features its hard to go back. When the new iOS comes out its kind of torturous waiting for the jailbreak 3-4 months later.
