Pat was great but when other schools started trying to win in women's college basketball she declined which of course was bound to happen. Not saying she wasn't a great coach just that the numbers are bit inflated by lack of competition.call me back when he has 1,098 wins, eight NCAA championships and 32 Southeastern Conference titles until then Pat is best. As a matter of fact she will still be the best even if Barnes were to make those accomplishments. Pat almost single handed built women's basketball at the collegiate level.
I'll admit, I was hesitant about posting this thread due to the perception it could be taken as somewhat reactionary. Thinking of Barnes' history as a coach overrode that concern. While he didn't win a NC at Texas, he fielded a top 5 team almost every year. Kentucky threw everything including the kitchen sink at him in 2006 to be their coach. He said, "no thanks", and they settled for Billy Gillispie. We've never hired a "big time " coach who has produced as successfully as Barnes. I'm confident with my assertionYep. Recency bias can definitely create a slight myopic perspective. Still, love me some Deacon....
Surveying the last twenty years of decisions by our AD's, certainly the best hire. Pearl would be a close second of that group.I'll admit, I was hesitant about posting this thread due to the perception it could be taken as somewhat reactionary. For me, it is Neyland/Summitt and everyone else is at a lower level.
Green wasn't a great coach, but rather a mediocre coach who inherited tremendous talent from Kevin O'Neal.
Mears, Pearl, and Barnes were/are the great men's basketball coaches at UT.
In baseball, Rod DelMonico deserves to be in this discussion for taking the Vols to the College World Series three times. The brain-dead Hamilton fired him in 2007 just 2 years after his last CWS appearance. Since 2007, UT has routinely missed even participating in the SEC tournament. This may be Hamilton's most bone head move of all - and that is saying something.
1990 to 2007. Hamilton fired him right before his son, who was a superstar high school baseball shortstop, would have played for the Vols. How long did he coach @ UT? I recall passing by as a student on campus and watching diamond vols play ( Todd Helton, etc). We could watch the games from fraternity row
'95, '01, and '05Thanks! I think Helton and co. went to World Series in 94 or around that time??
Yeah, firing Delmonico was not a good move, at all. I think UT finally got it right in baseball, with TV, too bad it took over a decadeFor me, it is Neyland/Summitt and everyone else is at a lower level.

UT in the CWS
Strange that Coach D never excelled elsewhere. There seems to be a back story there. The Netherlands 2009 WBB team?Yeah, firing Delmonico was not a good move, at all. I think UT finally got it right in baseball, with TV, too bad it took over a decade
Most of the programs have pulled out of the nose dive...with the obvious notable exception...
Delmonico was up and down as a coach here, some wanted him gone, I get that, but, disagree. Seems like he would struggle 2 or 3 years and then make a run, just in time to save his job. Never thought of UT as a baseball powerhouse, so I enjoyed the runs, but can understand people wanting more consistency. Still, it hit rock bottom for a decade after we fired him. The future looks good, tho under Tony VStrange that Coach D never excelled elsewhere. There seems to be a back story there. The Netherlands 2009 WBB team?
