Is Barnes the best coach EVER at UT?

Barnes is the best who hasn't won a national championship.

Neyland, Summitt, Majors and Fulmer are all more accomplished and at minimum Neyland and Summitt were better at their craft than Barnes at his. I'd probably add Majors to that too.

I think many tend to overreact to the more recent event instead of taking a look over time to the entire view. An Elite 8 or Final 4 would raise Barnes profile significantly.

Yep. Recency bias can definitely create a slight myopic perspective. Still, love me some Deacon....

call me back when he has 1,098 wins, eight NCAA championships and 32 Southeastern Conference titles until then Pat is best. As a matter of fact she will still be the best even if Barnes were to make those accomplishments. Pat almost single handed built women's basketball at the collegiate level.
Pat was great but when other schools started trying to win in women's college basketball she declined which of course was bound to happen. Not saying she wasn't a great coach just that the numbers are bit inflated by lack of competition.

For me, it is Neyland/Summitt and everyone else is at a lower level.

Green wasn't a great coach, but rather a mediocre coach who inherited tremendous talent from Kevin O'Neal.

Mears, Pearl, and Barnes were/are the great men's basketball coaches at UT.

In baseball, Rod DelMonico deserves to be in this discussion for taking the Vols to the College World Series three times. The brain-dead Hamilton fired him in 2007 just 2 years after his last CWS appearance. Since 2007, UT has routinely missed even participating in the SEC tournament. This may be Hamilton's most bone head move of all - and that is saying something.

I'll admit, I was hesitant about posting this thread due to the perception it could be taken as somewhat reactionary. Thinking of Barnes' history as a coach overrode that concern. While he didn't win a NC at Texas, he fielded a top 5 team almost every year. Kentucky threw everything including the kitchen sink at him in 2006 to be their coach. He said, "no thanks", and they settled for Billy Gillispie. We've never hired a "big time " coach who has produced as successfully as Barnes. I'm confident with my assertion

Surveying the last twenty years of decisions by our AD's, certainly the best hire. Pearl would be a close second of that group.

How long did he coach @ UT? I recall passing by as a student on campus and watching diamond vols play ( Todd Helton, etc). We could watch the games from fraternity row

1990 to 2007. Hamilton fired him right before his son, who was a superstar high school baseball shortstop, would have played for the Vols.

Yeah, firing Delmonico was not a good move, at all. I think UT finally got it right in baseball, with TV, too bad it took over a decade

The good ole days. We were relevant in football, baseball and women’s basketball. I think our track team did well, too.

Crazy how our entire athletic program went south.
Justin Gatlin and UT won 2 team track National Championships while he was here, around '91, I think

Most of the programs have pulled out of the nose dive...with the obvious notable exception...

I keep hope that next yr will be better, but I’ve been saying that 15 plus yrs. My son will be a freshman next yr so I hope things turn around in football. College life is better when you win! I heard a stat recently that Bama’s and Clemson’s enrollment and quality of academics have improved due to football. Sports matter!

Maybe it was 3 National Championships, 2 Indoor and one Outdoor, not sure, but I think that's right. Now, I gotta Google it

Strange that Coach D never excelled elsewhere. There seems to be a back story there. The Netherlands 2009 WBB team?
Delmonico was up and down as a coach here, some wanted him gone, I get that, but, disagree. Seems like he would struggle 2 or 3 years and then make a run, just in time to save his job. Never thought of UT as a baseball powerhouse, so I enjoyed the runs, but can understand people wanting more consistency. Still, it hit rock bottom for a decade after we fired him. The future looks good, tho under Tony V

Edit: or did I miss your whole meaning ?
