Is Barnes the best coach EVER at UT?

Yes. I recalled his name once mentioned. I'll even admit to remembering when he was the coach. That's probably why we couldn't remember his name...;)
He was an all-time great! Right up there with Broussard. Being a great coach in a non revenue sport doesn't lessen the coaching greatness

Rick Barnes is the best Men's Basketball Coach that Tennessee has ever had.

New avi, u all, Springer with the follow-thru. He is just shooting 70% from 3-point land.

There is one former UT coach that I haven’t noticed being mentioned. When he retired in 1988, he had a record of something like 250 wins and 20 losses. He won a NCAA championship, too.

Ray Bussard, swimming and diving coach
When Ray Bussard took over in 1968, Tennessee had not competed at the NCAA level in swimming since 1959. He immediately made Tennessee nationally competitive and won the NCAA Championship in 1978.

Barnes seems to have no problem interacting with Bobby Maze, one of Pearls former players. You know, the reason Springer and Keon are on the roster.

Is he a thug?
I have a friend that has a 13 year old son, that played for Maze's AAU team and probably still does, although I haven't talked to him since last Spring. I wouldn't call BMaze a thug, from what I hear, just a business man

She built the program starting from a closet of an office in her early/mid 20s, washing uniforms herself, and driving players in a van to away games. She went a long way in creating her competition by advocating & putting the sport on the map. Any "decline" at the end of her career was likely due to preliminary stages of early-onset Alzheimer's. Such a loss for our University. Wish she was still with us, healthy, & maybe even AD. Doubt she'd put up with what's going on in a certain sector of UT Sports right now.

Yep, she built a program from scratch and nearly single handedly built her sport nationally. In addition, she also won back to back titles within the last few seasons before her illness hit. Her last two seasons (I don't count the season which it was clear she was incapacitated and Warlick took over) were 32-3 and 34-3. No one was passing her by had she stayed healthy and this was in years 36 and 37 of her tenure. She was uniquely great and we will not see a coach of her caliber in our lifetimes at UT.

I think the top three in the last 50 years are Mears, Pearl and Barns in no particular order. All three are/were outstanding.

Barnes still has work to do to get that title. He can get there but he’s not done enough

Pat Summit would have to get that award for Tennessee, and I'm not a big Lady Vols fan. Her success is directly tied to UT.
Barnes is a really good coach and has been an amazing fit for UT, but his accomplishments at UT on paper aren't any better than Jerry Green's and Bruce Pearl's. (I only started following UT Kevin O'Neil's last year) I do think he's a better coach then both of them though. He's not as good of a promoter as Pearl.
General Neyland and Ray Mears, I'm not sure how many people know/care about them or their accomplishments outside of UT fans.
Johny Major's was successful at other schools.
Phillip Fulmer was good and deserves to be mentioned, but I personally don't think it would be him.
The Weekly's have been great for UT, but at the end of the day it's softball. I know they'll be good each year, but I'm not sure how much success they've had in the post season.

If you include all sports, Stan Huntsman, UT track coach in the 70's-80's was top notch. I think he was the US Olympics track and field coach also at one point. We were the dominant mens track team in the SEC for quite awhile.
I thought of the track team but didn’t know who was the coach.

call me back when he has 1,098 wins, eight NCAA championships and 32 Southeastern Conference titles until then Pat is best. As a matter of fact she will still be the best even if Barnes were to make those accomplishments. Pat almost single handed built women's basketball at the collegiate level.
32 SEC TITLES IS BONKERS!

Pearl dominates in the thug players department.
There were some terrific young men on those teams so let’s not put them all in a bad light. Chism and Lofton are two of my favorite and among the greatest Vols ever. Don’t let 2 or 3 bad apples ruin the bunch.

Pat for me. Barnes is a great coach though, I like what he's done here. It's hard to compete against Pat though, so far he hasn't got any hardware for us. Pat gave us 8 national titles. (If I got that right.) She was legendary as far as coaches in history and throughout the nation, not just here. What she did for women's basketball was huge or just coaching in general. Everyone had respect for her.

Just watch that and tell me she wasn't one heck of a coach. She was fiery and passionate about what she did.
