Is Butch loosing his appeal in with Tennessee recruits?

It's probably already been addressed in this thread, but I just wanted to point out that we are only a couple games into the season and the class is nearly full. I remember a couple years ago going into signing day and still not knowing if we'd be able to sign a full class.

Butch is absolutely turning this program around, but he will need some time.

Butch is one hell of a recruiter and it will bear fruit very soon.

Recruiting is about connections.. Last years in state class was all connected to the same circle. The perfect storm. Alot of this years are spread out and have their own connections elsewhere. Memphis and Ole miss will always have a link. So I don't even consider losing a Memphis kid losing in state.
Jefferson was connected to OSU and UGA more than TN with him not being from here. smith and Sheffield are vandy legacies.

Jackson Harris is only one I kind of worry about did we miss something there by not offering with TE being an important spot in our offense.

McGraw, Richmond, and Van are the three that we have missed on that we actually wanted in state.

Richmond if he sticks to the Ole Miss commitment is the only one that really stings out of those. The other two can be replace by similar talent possibly even better talent. Phillips is the other one that we would like to sign but have some work to do to get him. Just my two cents.

Butch did a great job with Bell...just a little bit late to the party.

Now is when someone says the obligatory "thanks DD".

Jones has done beyond a great job on all we have pursued.

With Van, I think we had almost recruited the position too well for him to land here. Nothing against UGA (other than they suck of course :p) but I think the two teams were close in the eyes of him and his parents. I think he would be at UT if not for the depth chart though. I don't think he was scared of competition BUT I think the depth and youth of the WR position at UT was a factor.

McGraw being associated with Devinner pretty much negates us even having a chance at him. It also negates me wanting us to go anywhere near him with a ten foot pole as well.

If you read the thread title as, "Is Butch loosing his APPLE in with Tennessee recruits", it's actually quite amusing.

Aside from that........not so much.

Old Mess has had the edge (for some reason) with the big OTs out of Memphis for quite awhile now. It's hard to hang that on Butch Jones. He'll close this class out strong enough.

It sucks that a lot of talent in the state of Tennessee comes out of Memphis, which is the hardest place to recruit.

I admit I need to go and read all the posts in this thread....

........but WTF OP. Butch has been killing it since he arrived signing great players, Has a ton committed so far this year, and you give us this?

Read quote below from coach thigpen. This is a major reason why it all came to gather with TN recruits last year. This years recruits don't have same connection with each other. But Butch is doing just fine hell you can't win them all.and I live near bama line there is plenty of tide fans here in TN some people grow up liking other teams it happens. Butch can recruit quite crying over kids picking other schools I think we offered 120 kids only 25 will commit to us!!

"It was a great strategy by Coach Jones of connecting people. Vic Wharton and Todd Kelly are childhood friends. Wharton and Gaulden became best friends at Independence, Gaulden and Barnett grew up together, Malone and Sawyers were great friends from long ago," he explained. "Hurd and Robertson's parents were best friends, so none of it was by accident. They were all connected some way or another, but it all came down to Coach Jones' plan and a lot of hard work by the entire staff."

Thanks.

Creativity excapes me kwite reggarly.

Seriously, though. If you've followed Vol recruiting over the past 10+ years it's tough to get the best players out of Memphis. It stings but we should be used to it by now.

Van went to UGA, it sucks but we got great depth and talent at WR. UGA surprisingly is lacking at WR, can't blame the kid for going to a school where he might play significantly as a freshman.

We got three spots left right now, but **** happens. Players flip at the last minute, we will still end up with a very good class IMO if we can get some more help on both lines. Speed and smarts has improved on the back end of the defense.

Tennessee has had a increase in HS talent the last few years, it should be no surprise that some go off to other SEC schools, even when we would have minimal HS talent Auburn seemed to get all the best players out of Brentwood.

I'm not big on getting into recruiting, the class Coach Fulmer recruited in 05 that was ranked so high, broke me from it. Player development is what grabs my attention these days.

I saw Van play Friday night.. He looks the part as a Higly recruited DI prospect but Ravenwood QB is not a DI prospect therefore maybe only had 5 to 6 balls thrown his way. Built like Justin Hunter but not as tall .. Not in the same class as P Williams as bring physically imposing or just being a freak of nature

Your concerns are understandable considering we lost a recruit we really wanted today, but it's just not true. Our coach is cast in about as good of a light in recruits eyes as we could possibly hope for as fans. Considering where we've been. We're golden and ahead of schedule. He's doing much better than any TN coach in a while.

He'll have plenty more appeal after he whoops Oklahoma in their own house on ABC this weekend.
who'd we get after that happened?

i dont really count Memphis as part of Tennessee. Its tough to pull those kids. We may get Vaughn and i dont think Ordway is what alot of schools originally thought. UT could still end up with Vaughn and maybe Phillips. Not sure what youre complaining about. Not to mention Justin Martin is a top notch JUCO with 3 yrs to play and hes a Tennessean.

We always accept it as normal when we pluck players from other states, but a Tennessee kids goes elsewhere and suddenly Butch can't recruit.

Also have to remember not all guys grew up rooting for Tennessee like a lot of us. No tie in to the school and frankly all they remember is us going downhill the past few years. Not all 17 or 18 yr old kids want to go into a rebuild, they want the instant gratification that a lot of kids want in this generation.
