Is Florida vs Tennessee really a rivalry?.

Twist the knife and then play innocent.

I really don't know what you are talking about.

I rivalry divides families, offices, communities, etc.

I'm sure Florida Tennessee does that for a few, but not many.

I doubt many people in Johnson city dreaded going to work because of all the gator fans they would run into

The answer is no, and it hasn't been since like 2009 or even 2007, unfortunately. But it was in the late 90s and early 2000s...the gator buddy needs to understand that a rivalry need not be geographic. Notre Dame USC is and always has been a huge rivalry...nothing geographic about it.

If you go on W/L's to determine a rivalry, then we are rivals with Candy and KY Jelly and maybe AU. Rivalries are much more than that. I consider our rivals to be Bama due to our long history with them, Candy since they are in state, and KY Jelly since we used to have a "trophy" that we played for. The other games are tough, hard fought games but they are minor rivalries to me. IMO JMO OMO.

I dont understand how what i wrote was inflammatory.

A true rivalry has nothing to do with the scoreboard.

That was my point.

I didn't see anything inflammatory with your remarks. In fact, I think you do a good job of bringing valid points into discussions without insulting anyone.

And I can certainly see your side of it not being a rivalry. I think 10 years ago it could somewhat be viewed as one, because either Florida or TN would consistently win the SEC East, so it was more competitive with that in mind. But it is definitely not a rivalry at this point, despite what many TN fans want to believe.

True, but there is history behind it.

Like i said, colts-patriots compared to cowboys-redskins

In the 90's, the game blew up because of

1. Spurrier

2. What was at stake

3. The rest of the league was pretty much crap.

Think of how many great matchups in the sec there are this year and how many there were in 1995. So, the game was bigger than a normal big game because there was no other game.

But, i doubt anyone cared about it until the 90's and i am talking about each fan base

You are correct, but there can be new and old rivalries.

I think it's still a rivalry, since we want to beat Florida more than most teams except maybe Bama every year. Just because we aren't beating them doesn't mean it isn't a rivalry. It will just make the next time we beat em all the more sweet!

I hate Florida way more than any other team not named Bama. Speak for yourself if you think it isn't a rivalry anymore.

Yeah i've read some of your stuff the last few days. You know guy why don't you find your own board.. I've heard about the no respect and all you really do is come in here and needle us.. Maybe the Mods will see this too and give you what you deserve a ban..

I'm not sure why you feel he's needling us here. He's right that, to UF, their two biggest rivalries have always been FSU and UGA as 1a and 1b. We've usually fallen behind those two to that fan base.

That has nothing to do with any sort of "you guys are down so much that it's not really worth calling this a rivalry anymore" type of comment.

Sadly our biggest rival right now is Vanderbilt... and I base that largely on the numerous posts on VN and the comments and reactions of Vols fans toward Vandy.

The truth hurts.

I feel that's actually more somewhat of a "feeling always been there" kind of thing; I was on one of the UGA boards the offseason after they lost to Vandy and the reaction/ continued discussions of it were nowhere near what it was here after losing.

Of course, then again, some of that could also be because we share a state with them.

Good lord, you need a tissue? Everything he said is correct. It wasn't a rivalry before the divisions, and it really was only one for a bit in the 90s. Before the 90s and after the 90s, it's not been one.

Tennessee-Florida is absolutely a rivalry. This is more ledge-jumping talk. It's not just about wins and losses, it's about which teams you want to beat the most.

As stated before, Bama stayed our rival when we were pummeling them every year. The gators will always be our rival. They even said the other day on ESPN something along the lines of "what used to be the biggest rivalry in college football has lost its luster due to the recent history".

At one point this game was the Michigan-Ohio State of the south. One team having it's down years doesn't change that.

Curious, when was it compared to as being that?

Actually, I've been told UT did used to be rivals with Auburn before the divisional split, as well as Ole Miss.

Now, the rivalry was nothing along the lines of Auburn's rivalry with UGA or their defunct rivalry with UF though.

Before the league split into divisions, UT rarely played UF and UGA. UT played:

Auburn
Bama
Ole Miss
UK
Vandy

And rotated in Miss St., LSU, UGA, UF

Auburn/UT was a pretty good rivalry. The 1991 game was a hard ticket to get because it was the last time they would play on an annual basis.

It is not a rivalry and neither is the Alabama game. In order for it to be a rivalry, both teams have to win at least occasionally. That is not the case for UT now, unfortunately.

I remember when I use to think Alabama was an easy game for the VOLS. Things change.. We will be back.

Is Florida vs Tennessee really a rivalry? Not a rivalry at present, but more of a measuring stick for our program in terms of where we are. When we lose to the Gators (an it's often) we see where we really need to improve. We're not competitive against them... at the moment. Stay tune, Butch is working on it.

This is one of those situations where the game means more to one side than the other. It's a big deal to UT fans because of what the game has often meant over the last 20+ years. It's rarely meant the same thing to Florida, so their fans don't view the series through the same lens.

Thanks for the verification. I always felt that after the initial divisional split (during the initial 5-2-1 scheduling set up) if we couldn't play Auburn they should have at least paired us up with Ole Miss as our 2nd yearly cross-divisional opponent.

But they gave us Arkansas instead (and then backed off on that 10 years later)
