Is Florida vs Tennessee really a rivalry?.

It hasn't been much of a rivalry lately, and the Vols should be tired of getting there ass handed to them by the Gators. The talent gap is not that wide now, the Gators seemed to want it more and outplayed us.
That QB played WR last year. :shakehead:

Here's another way to think about it.

They write books about Alabama Tennessee.

Anyone believe someone will write a book about Florida Tennessee?

Any SEC game except for Missouri and Texas Aand M can be considered a rivalry.

The Vols main rival is and always will be Alabama though.

UT-FL was just an important game once upon a time that Fulmer managed to figure out a way to lose every year.

Now, it's just a game.

Of course not, silly. Everyone knows Florida fans can't read.

I think it's still a rivalry, since we want to beat Florida more than most teams except maybe Bama every year. Just because we aren't beating them doesn't mean it isn't a rivalry. It will just make the next time we beat em all the more sweet!

We may consider FL and Bama as rivals. Does FL and Bama consider TN a rivalry or just another SEC game ?

UF was NEVER the rival that Alabama was and still is. Part of that is due to the fact we have played Alabama virtually every year since the 20's or 30's. We didn't really start playing FL at all until the late 80's or early 90's. We never played UF while I was in school. So "generations" do not have the Gators as rivals like they do the "Crimson Tide"

And then add that today we suck against both teams pretty consistently.

Bama fans absolutely consider Tennessee a rival. But we share a history that doesn't exist between UT and Florida.

It's pretty much a forced rivalry because of the division setup; the same can somewhat be said for Georgia, though I think there was a bit more history to that one.

The 90s setup what could have been a big time rivalry, but as 99gator said, it was more like the Pats/Colts from '00-'10. It was a big game that for years determined usually who was going to Atlanta, but that fizzled out in the early part of last decade. For now UF is a team we can't beat, and UT is just another team to UF. We're basically a few notches above VU and UK.

Also it was silly back when they made such a big deal about UT not winning in the Swamp; the media would always point out "UT hasn't won at the Swamp since 1971!", which was a completely useless stat since after that 1971 game and before they started playing annually, UT had played at the Swamp only 3 times (1977, 1985, 1991).

It was a BIG rivalry for a few years in the late 1990s, early 2000s when we were good/very good and both were top 10 programs, with the gators coached by spurrier. I was at the '99 game at florida, at night, and it was HUGE--absolutely electric atmosphere---just as it was the year before and a few other times during Manning/Martin era. But then we fell off and it's been dreary and one-sided ever since. Florida doesn't even have to play well to beat us now--that's what is really pathetic. Just look at this year's game: they were terrible in the first half and led by 10 at the break.

Even then they still dominated us for the most part.

Since 1976, our Vols are 6-22 in the last 28 meetings

That is astonishing. I honestly didn't realize it was that bad.

I've got a friend who is a damn gator, and he loves saying that "UT needs to realize that the 90's were an anomaly, and that the game has passed ya'll by". Not sure how much longer he's gonna be a friend haha.

Yes it's still a rivalry. We won 7 straight on bama into mid 2000's. Was it still a rivalry? Yes. Auburn beat bama 8 or 9 in a row into the mid 2000's. Was it still a rivalry? Yes. Etc. Comparing it to Vandy or KY is crazy. You know which schools are elite anf will return to winning and which ones will never compete consistently. Down periods of domination mean nothing. You just enjoy it when you're on the right side of it. It changes nothing

We've played UF a fraction of the times we've played Alabama; and actually VU and UK are historically bigger rivals.

This isn't to pick on you, but I'm curious to see how bad you thought it was. I think there are a lot of fans in that are in the same boat.

Against UF, it's been bad for nearly 40 years.

No, no. No offense taken, I understand what you mean. I guess it just "felt" closer than that. Denial is a powerful thing haha

Yeah i've read some of your stuff the last few days. You know guy why don't you find your own board.. I've heard about the no respect and all you really do is come in here and needle us.. Maybe the Mods will see this too and give you what you deserve a ban..

Haven't read his other stuff recently but what was wrong with what he said here?

I think each team (-Mizzu) is Tenn's rival because they play every year for the same goal of winning the East. That could be considered "rivalry".

It also depends on which team. Florida has bigger rivals than UT as far as national stage goes with what he mentioned, so the UT game isn't as big to them as for UT. Just like UT vs Vandy.

Maybe you're just mad UT lost or that UF has more big rivals, but there was truth is his post.

Actually, I've been told UT did used to be rivals with Auburn before the divisional split, as well as Ole Miss.

Now, the rivalry was nothing along the lines of Auburn's rivalry with UGA or their defunct rivalry with UF though.

In the 60s before the first SEC expansion and the defection of Tulane and GA Tech...Tennessee's FB conference schedule was something like this...

Auburn
GA Tech
Alabama
LSU
Mississippi
Kentucky
Vanderbilt

We rarely played UGA, UF, Tulane or Miss St.

Out of conference we played some good teams such as Army, BC, UCLA, So. Carolina, Houston and Penn St. Others were Duke, Wash St., Rutgers, Temple, and North Texas. Later we started playing the Southern Miss and UABs of the world.

Since 1976, our Vols are 6-22 in the last 28 meetings, having only once won on consecutive meetings (2003 and 2004).
The current streak the Gators are on, only one game was decided by less than a touchdown.

Tennessee's 4 most recent wins in the series, 3 have been decided by a FG or less.

Thoughts?

According to most of the fans on this site u have to win at least half the time for it to be a rivalry. I guess Florida, Bama and Georgia are not rivals.
