Very accurate and perceptive analysis. Can we really blame Holly for the various Lady Vol debacles and inconsistencies? Just maybe she is a victim of her environment. She learned at the feet of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, basketball coaches to grace a women's basketball sideline. Holly has limited experience with any other coach or team. In the past, the Lady Vols had the best women's basketball players on the planet, however, that is not the case today. All the best players are not playing in Knoxville, they are spread among the top 10 to 15 teams. What won for the Lady Vols in the past will no longer get it done. Women now play the inside/outside game, they play a version of the motion offense and the good teams are physical. Top coaches all display a version of the Summitt stare, they don't simply pat you on the butt and say, "that's okay." They know how to make game changes on the fly and have plans that don't necessarily stop the other team's best scorer but at least make their shots difficult.
Maybe as an assistant and player, Holly realized too much success and very little adversity. Just maybe the Lady Vols, being so dominant in their hay day, made winning seem too easy, all you had to do is get a bunch of 5 stars and you were guaranteed success. All the early Lady Vol success and the intimidation, that automatically brought fear to their opponents to the point they were defeated before the initial jump ball, made losing unthinkable.
Maybe, it is simply the fact that Holly may never get it because she does not have the mettle to be a successful head coach.
I agree 100 percent with your post. However, Holly is crying all the way to the bank. Her annual salary is $675,000."Maybe, it is simply the fact that Holly may never get it because she does not have the mettle to be a successful head coach."
Ya think...….. That was from the start. Cant blame her...…...she literally FELL into the job. She should of had the good sense to resign 3 years ago out of embarrassment. She CAN not Coach. You can write a book on what she does wrong. It doesn't matter, it will have fall to depths no one could think UT Lady Vol Basketball could fall to...…… Phil gave her a VOTE of confidence raise and extension. HE aint gonna do squat. Hang on people it IS going to get worse. And please don't start all the crap about the players or she has lost the team...…….she NEVER had the team. SHE CAN NOT COACH!!!!!
Because its NOT about recruiting!! Its about CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! You know... WINNING them!!
They can find another person with Holly's "preferences" believe me. Very easily. At any rate...she needs to be fired IMMEDIATELY. It is way past time....and each day she remains the program gets just a little bit worse..to the point it will soon deteriorate to the point it will be very difficult to save. She is destroying this program, The way this team consistently under performs is shocking and devastating. We're not talking a game or two...but multiple seasons of wasting top talent on a clueless clown coach who has absolutely zero ability as to how to coach a top level program. The only wins we do have are by sheer talent overcoming the extreme ineptitude of the head coach. Recruiting won't take a hit....but action needs to be taken ASAP or else the memories of what this program used to be dissipates completely. The past is what drives the top recruiting we have miraculously been able to maintain during Harley's disastrous tenure. This is a state of emergency for this program. Holly has NEVER exceeded expectations...but only miserably failed time and again while having top talent. The "we're a young team" excuse was worn out years ago with this dumpster fire of a "coach"...yet she keeps going to it. She is a complete and utter failure and every day she remains the head coach is a lost opportunity and a willingness to cede everything that was good and right about this fallen program. It's not fair to the fans...the school...or the players unfortunate enough to be entrusted to her care. Each day she remains I lose a little bit of respect for AD Fulmer as someone who either doesn't have the guts..or who doesn't care enough about the program to make the move that is so desperately needed to be made.As long as she’s here UT will be seen as “inclusive”.
This is the best analysis on the state of Lady Vol basketball and what should be done to right the program. Holly needs to accept the fact that she has had a wonderful opportunity to sustain a great basketball program but could not do it. Being the head coach requires an ability to get the best out of the players she recruits. It is obvious this is not the case. She should be held acountable just like the past and present coaches of other sports at the University. If she does not accept a change is in order then the AD needs to do what is necessary to save the program.Of course its her fault professionally. CHW is the walking embodiment of the Peter Principle, having risen to the level of her incompetence. Everything said above and endlessly elsewhere is undeniable at this point; over 6 1/2 seasons players and assistant coaches have changed but two things have remained the same: the problems and the head coach. Its not so much that they lose more, its how they lose more and the consistency of the problems.
All that said, I hate for Holly to be made out a personal villain. I think she's a really good person who loves the LV program and I can only imagine how painful this very public failing is for her, especially under the circumstances in which she got the job: her hometown, her alma mater, spent her life literally in this program, handed the keys by her beloved and dying mentor who happened to be a legend. And she cannot get it done. I can't dance on this grave, only be sad it turned out this way for her.
I understand she could spare herself and all of us this ongoing agony by stepping aside, and I actually think that's how this will end, hopefully at the end of this season. I'm surprised there hasn't already been an intervention by those closest to CHW to implore her to take herself out of this horrible situation. Several have asked what Pat would say or do in this situation and I believe she would do exactly that: have a loving but honest come to Jesus with Holly and tell her she should do what she does best, recruit and not coach.
No one, Pat, Holly, nor the administration could have known Holly would lack the coaching magic trick that separates decent coaches from great ones: the ability to coach intangibles such as focus, development, and the ability to stick to a game plan. Can't know any of this until one is actually in charge of a program. So giving Holly the keys was not a "fault" but not having her surrender them and calling an Uber at this point certainly is.
