Is it time to drop the extra federal unemployment money?

In SC, it ends June 30th. My bosses at my Valet job(my second job) will be happy about that. Hopefully, it will cause evictions which will result in a housing market correction. (mainly rentals)

A lot of HS kids aren't fortunate and work to keep the lights on and a roof over their heads while mommy and daddy are drinking/doing drugs collecting a government check.
I understand that. I still don’t see it as justification for a federally mandated equivalent wage for all minors as compared to adults that’s clearly not justified. And sounds like those kids shouldn’t be in those homes in the first place then.

I suppose I should have been more specific and said renting an airstream.

I think the UI boost needs to end but it's been nice watching owners and managers actually having to work the **** jobs they pay **** wages to do. As someone in administrative roles for the past few years who has never been one to shy away from dirty work, it's been grand seeing some folks humbled in the past few months.
Eh it was more just using airstream at all a more accurate description would have been renting/owning a Forest River but then people would wonder what the hell youre talking about.

Also those low wage payers would still be suffering now even if the extended benes are removed since I’d hope people would be smart enough to go to the ones paying a higher wage? 🤷‍♂️

Believe me, Dunkin' Donuts owners have always done "grunt work".

WTF kind of question is this? Of course its time. This experimentation with universal basic income is even showing liberals the downside of that idea.

Liberals are the last to join Noah's Arc. Many will just stare at it with their heads slowly swaying back and forth like it's a UFO.

Wait....... You can own a business and not work yourself into an early grave?

Interesting. Unanimous agreement, with some differences after the fact, on a political issue. A rare event in the PF.

I'm all for ending any govt expenditure but are that many people really staying home for an extra $300? That could easily be surpassed with many of the open positions

Here's anecdote to your post. Former tenant and her baby daddy who had employment disruption due to covid. He got stimulus, and unemployment. He qualified so can't fault him for taking it. He mowed the grass at my duplex for rent reduction. When he lost his job, he started mowing a few of the neighbors property for cheap but they had to pay cash. Wasn't long before he had about 20 yards. he was getting about 20-30 a yard. Plus his stimulus and unemployment. She retained her job because it was essential. Must have done well because they bought a house and moved out in January.

$600 a week is $15/hr and a large chunk of that is untaxed. And there’s no work involved. So the question is how much must the offered wage be above $15 for me to get off the couch? All the help wanted signs I see around town indicate that it’s quite a bit.

I am sure there are slackers loafing about on it. But I also know there are people working off the books or only working a minimum amount of hours on the books so as not to be forcibly weened off Uncle Sam's teet.

It’s hard to fault them either, the working off the books ones anyway. As usual a government handout program is poorly setup and ripe for exploitation. I’m shocked!

Agreed. And the dude in my example wasn't even working that hard. he mowed about 5 yards a day. Usually in the morning or early evening when it was not as hot.

Kudos to him for taking a lemon and making lemonade. I don’t fault what they did at all. I fault the idiot federal government for setting up sloppy entitlement benefits to disincentivize people to work.

Also, do you guys really think the majority of UI collectors aren't just hustling for cash on the side?

There shouldn’t be a federal minimum wage to begin with. $15hr in NYC isn’t $15 in Tupelo, MS. Leave it up to the states.

Most people I know used their initial stimmy to either work for cash on the side or transition industries. Hell, I came dangerously close to go into coding if you recall. I ended up traveling instead after getting job security for the early spring.

Didn't feel an iota of guilt about it.

Did it ever occur to you that the owners/managers started off doing the **** work?

We agree on this. With wildly varying living costs from regional variance to urban/rural variance there is no way one number can accurately reflect the cost of living in all areas.

Shouldn't even be a state minimum wage. Let the job market sort itself out.

People aren't going to work for **** wages and employers are finally realizing it. Starting pay is increasing in a lot of jobs.
