There was absolutely no reason to have Saban on a list before the 2006 season, and Hamilton didn't need to hire anyone then. The problem is, I don't think that Saban was even on MH's list that he keeps in the drawer before he went to Alabama. And I sure didn't buy the list of coaches put out by writer32. I doubt that any of them were contacted and offered that boat load of money.
I don't buy that. To get a coach that wins, usually you'll have to pay more than market value. I think Hamilton would have taken Saban if he had the chance. It's just that you rarely get an opportunity like that.
Moore tried to go for other people, he just whiffed and the boosters got tired of his incompetence.Yeah, Hamilton would take Saban if he called him up and Saban said, "absolutely, I want to be your coach and money is no obstacle."...but, as history clearly demonstrates, he wouldn't get him if Saban turned him down the first time, like Saban did with Moore. Hamilton wouldn't try to recruit Saban, just like he's never gone out of his way to recruit a coach who wasn't sure about coming here. Hamilton would just go to the next number on his list.
But really, why wouldn't he? No matter who he hires, most of the people here will always be like "this is a solid hire. he's got intangibles. etc. etc."
Tennessee isn't that big of a name where getting Cal would have really been realistic. Kentucky is in basketball.I heard MH say that he kept a list of coaches he would like to hire in his desk just in case we lost a coach. Bet Saban was not on that list then, and not on the list now. Just like Cal was never on the list.
I think this is exactly MH's attitude. Bama bird dogged Saban and wouldn't take no for an answer. I don't think that's MH's attitude.
Bama needed a coach and would not take no until Saban said yes. Kentucky needed a coach and would not take no until Cal said yes. UT needs and coach and wouldn't take no until Martin said yes. This is the difference I see.
The whole administration works like Fulmer did. Doing less with more is a science, these guys have it down pat.The situation is this. Either we can't hire a big time coach or we refuse to hire a big time coach. You take your pick.

In all seriousness they're cheap. They'd rather raise your ticket rates and give you a second rate product to hang your hopes on, it's the Hamilton way.
I disagree. The NCAA issues that occurred under his watch were far worse than anything Hamilton dealt with. His track record for hiring coaches was worse than Hamilton's before he got Saban as well. It's not like hiring Saban took any special ability to evaluate talent.
