Is Mike Hamilton the greatest AD of all time?

The problem is, I don't think that Saban was even on MH's list that he keeps in the drawer before he went to Alabama. And I sure didn't buy the list of coaches put out by writer32. I doubt that any of them were contacted and offered that boat load of money.

There was absolutely no reason to have Saban on a list before the 2006 season, and Hamilton didn't need to hire anyone then.

I don't buy that. To get a coach that wins, usually you'll have to pay more than market value. I think Hamilton would have taken Saban if he had the chance. It's just that you rarely get an opportunity like that.

Yeah, Hamilton would take Saban if he called him up and Saban said, "absolutely, I want to be your coach and money is no obstacle."...but, as history clearly demonstrates, he wouldn't get him if Saban turned him down the first time, like Saban did with Moore. Hamilton wouldn't try to recruit Saban, just like he's never gone out of his way to recruit a coach who wasn't sure about coming here. Hamilton would just go to the next number on his list.

But really, why wouldn't he? No matter who he hires, most of the people here will always be like "this is a solid hire. he's got intangibles. etc. etc."

Why was he on Bama's list?
Why not try? Didn't we try for Gruden? The difference is Saban didn't want to stick it out. People will say it's about preference, but I doubt he had confidence in his future there in Miami.

Moore tried to go for other people, he just whiffed and the boosters got tired of his incompetence.

I heard MH say that he kept a list of coaches he would like to hire in his desk just in case we lost a coach. Bet Saban was not on that list then, and not on the list now. Just like Cal was never on the list.

Tennessee isn't that big of a name where getting Cal would have really been realistic. Kentucky is in basketball.

Tennessee has a good football program, but not good enough to get NFL coaches that think they have job security. I bet Gruden didn't know he was about to get axed in Tampa Bay.

I don't think it would have mattered how hard, unless we offered him about 8 million dollars a year.
I think this is exactly MH's attitude. Bama bird dogged Saban and wouldn't take no for an answer. I don't think that's MH's attitude.

I would love to see Moore try to get Gruden to come. Bet that wouldn't work out so well. He didn't get Saban just because he was persistent. He got Saban because Saban knew he wasn't going to be in the NFL much longer and realized that Alabama was a better job than Arizona State.

We could have held Cal's family hostage; it wouldn't have made any difference.

bama chased a lot of names. Acting like they set their sights on Saban only isn't realistic

If the fat girl from Facts of Life coached the Lady Vols, I might be compelled to willingly watch my first 30 seconds or so of a women's basketball game.

I'd rather have the lesbian from Facts of Life, Jo.

Bama needed a coach and would not take no until Saban said yes. Kentucky needed a coach and would not take no until Cal said yes. UT needs and coach and wouldn't take no until Martin said yes. This is the difference I see.

if RichRod said yes they wouldn't have Saban. Why did they allow that to happen?

The situation is this. Either we can't hire a big time coach or we refuse to hire a big time coach. You take your pick.

The whole administration works like Fulmer did. Doing less with more is a science, these guys have it down pat.

In all seriousness they're cheap. They'd rather raise your ticket rates and give you a second rate product to hang your hopes on, it's the Hamilton way.

That's true. They know the majority of people aren't going to stop going to the games. That's the only thing that will ever get the point across to them. For as much as I detest what our football program has been allowed to become, I'll still shell out $1000+ this fall to attend the home games, as well as spending a couple weekends on the road to watch them, and all that to watch yet another 6-6 or 7-5 team that will probably get manhandled by our main rivals. Following a sports team is like a drug in a lot of ways. The administration knows they've got people hooked, so it seems they could honestly care less whether we win or lose. They're making money either way.

I disagree. The NCAA issues that occurred under his watch were far worse than anything Hamilton dealt with. His track record for hiring coaches was worse than Hamilton's before he got Saban as well. It's not like hiring Saban took any special ability to evaluate talent.

They are both bad Ads but Bama will spent the money and Hamilton will not.

Seems that we just may be unlucky. Bama gets turned down by Michigan's coach and Spurrier, and settle on Saban. Wonder who else was on the list before they settled on Saban?
