Is Sal Sunseri the worst hire in UT history?

They have all been said, the top 5 all time bad hires (in recent memory). All have their own reason for being a bad hire.

Hamilton - Worst AD in UT history
Clawson - Worst OC in UT history
Sunseri - Worst DC in UT history
Dooley - Worst HC in UT history
Kiffin - Obvious reasons due to timing.

Know defensive coaches at bama are pissed at Sal because their stock went down with Sal. Fwiw Saban was surprised we got Sal.

Not buying it. Use the "contact us" feature. Freak will change it.

It's the truth. I honestly have been surprised that no one has "gotten" it. But, if people are under the assumption that I am or have ever been a sunseri supporter, then i suppose it's time for a name change. Thanks for the advice.

Dooley is the worst head football coach in UT history, so I figure that makes him a worse hire than the worst defensive coordinator in UT history. Also, Dooley sucked here for 3 years, Sunseri only sucked for one. And, given Dooley's history, even if Sunseri had been all right, Dooley still probably would have found another way to lose, just like he did with every assistant coach he had.

Hamilton v. Dooley is a more interesting debate. One could easily argue Hamilton did far more damage and thus, was a worse hire. But it's hard for him to equal the total and complete incompetence that Dooley demonstrated.

Very well said. Dooley was the worst hire in Tennessee history especially when you consider he was paid approximately $11,000,000 for his four SEC wins in three years. That is in the realm of Nick Saban money. Dooley is really such a joke I'm getting mad thinking about it.

Actually this makes ALOT of sense. We are seeing what is very possibly the worst stretch of football in UT history. If it isn't THE worst, then it must be a close second...and I'm not trying to be sarcastic. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that the "top 5" list is all recent coaches. When disasters happen, it's always a chain of failures that leads up to it...this is fact, I'm not just making that up. Your list (which I think we all can agree upon) backs up my logic on this one. EVERYTHING depends on our next hire. I just don't think we can survive another 5 years of pure suck...not if we want to see a nationally competitive UT football team in our lifetimes

Conspiracy Theory: There have been many rumors that Sunseri was Hart's hire and that Dooley actually wanted Steele...until the Clemson bowl blowout. What if Hart brought in Sunseri here knowing it would fail and that would be the end of Dooley and he could hire Smart? Only the Powers that Be (i.e. Big money guys) didn't want Smart and on their own decided to go out and try and get Gruden. Just a theory...

Seriously, the dude will go down as one of the worst for sure. How many games would dooley have won this year if he had had a proper defense...2,3, more? I'd be willing to wager that he would still have his job. Since I firmly believe dooley needed to go, I guess sunseri was a blessing in disguise. Cool story to be sure.

Sal should have been booted earlier this year. You can't give up 35+ points per game and expect to win.

Dooley was worse.

Dumbest statement I've read all week.

RIGHT! All the folks that don't agree with that are just sheeple. They're all close-minded and need to open their eyes. Also, ufos are real

After watching some of Clawson's O at Richmond and BG. He never got to run his O at UT. So maybe he is the worst OC at coaching someone elses O style.

Bill Battle was the worst hire ever, and it ain't even close. He took a program that was in great shape, and destroyed it for the better part of a decade. You guys really don't know much Vol history do you? Sunseri is however the second worst IMO.

Dave Clawson is up there as well...

I'm not defending Sal, but Clawson has to be worse. Sal may have brought down Dooley. But, Dooley was a long shot to start with. Clawson brought down a coach that won a national title. Don't get me wrong, Fulmer needed to go. Both coaches made bad hires. Compare the records of the coaches that hired the coordinator. It's an easy choice.

The most disturbing thing about Sunseri is that he did not seem to have any clue before the season regarding what was about to happen to his defense. I saw interviews after spring practice and then again in the fall "that the players were picking up the defense and their intensity was good". After the NC State game, it just kept getting progressively worse.
