Is Sal Sunseri the worst hire in UT history?

Bill Battle was the worst hire ever, and it ain't even close. He took a program that was in great shape, and destroyed it for the better part of a decade. You guys really don't know much Vol history do you? Sunseri is however the second worst IMO.

Bill Battle never had a losing season & won double digit games his 1st 3 years. While he inherited a lot and trended down, no way he is worse than what we are seeing now. This is record levels of suckage in UTs proud football history.

Sal's pretty awful and he should've been able to identify early on that the transition wasn't going to work with a shakier D than was optimal for such a change. That was the biggest mistake, imo -- not being able to see early on it just wasn't going to work at the time he wanted to implement it. That's either arrogance or a lack of being able to see when things are too rough to go all in with the transition, maybe a bit of both.

Seriously, the dude will go down as one of the worst for sure. How many games would dooley have won this year if he had had a proper defense...2,3, more? I'd be willing to wager that he would still have his job. Since I firmly believe dooley needed to go, I guess sunseri was a blessing in disguise. Cool story to be sure.

I think he is worst because the defense was awful. Some of it was secondary speed, but most of it was not knowing what the heck they were supposed to be doing out there.

Kiffin wasn't a bad hire, it was just a bad ending that was a wild turn of events. He is nowhere near as horrific as Dooley.

You think Southern Cal will be coming to hire that reject Dooley?

Hamilton is the worse, followed by Battle, Kiffen and Dooley. Hammy though gave Fulmer and extension then fired him and cost us 6 million, hired Kiffen over Kelly and Patterson, then hired Dooley and gave him and extension and cost us 5 million more.

You forgot OTOH, that Hambone let Kiffin out after 1yr for peanuts! He should have had to pony $5-7mil to walk out in a year. That was his job and he blew it. Lane killed us by trashing our name like a fool, recruiting who he did, inviting NCAA investigators (sorry Bruce), then leaving at the worst possible time.

That said, as a pure hire Sunseri is prob the worst. Clawson close behind. Worst defense I've ever seen in 35 yrs of UT football. By far!

I can't believe Dave Clawson is being mentioned in this thread! He really never had full control of the offense, he was a Band-Aid at best, a hire Fulmer was forced to make. But Clawson did turn a Forham and Richmond program around, and is doing the same at BGSU. In Fact, he has more wins as a college coach than Dooley in Kiffen combined! Clawson would have done no worse than Dooley at UT.

I have been watching UT football since 1971, this was by far the worst Defense I have ever seen......period, at any level of football I have ever watched. Sunseri is a position coach at best.

Mike Hamilton should be there too. To have ALL THREE major programs under investigation at the same time, might be a first. When you hire chumps, bad things happen.

Chaney, was able to take Clawsons team and do a much better job with same talent. By mid season, Crompton almost looked like a QB.

Clawson = Dooley/Sunseri

No kidding.

To add further, if we're talking about bad offensive hires of the last 12 years, the list really begins and ends with Greg Adkins and Jimmy Ray Stephens. For all those years, the backbone of the UT offense was a strong and ferocious offensive line. Those two got better prospects than their predecessors had and did absolutely nothing with them...little production on the field, and almost none developed into NFL players at all.

Clawson destroyed Fulmer and Sal destroyed Dooley. Folks seem to think Hart forced Dooley to hire Sal. Maybe Hart is in the mix with them. Hart is set to fall unless his next hire is not a grand slam.

Mike Hamilton hired Kiffin (who got UT in trouble), fired Rod Delmonico (two CWS appearances) and hired Todd Raleigh (terrible team manager), amd then hired a WAC coach with a losing record. The answer is easy here folks.

No, Dave Clawson in 2008 was! I swear I wanted to beat him like a rented mule if I ever ran into him..

He is to Dooley was Clawson was to Fulmer. Kind of sad to think that if we would have just held every opponent to 20 points (a lot by SEC standards) we would have been 9-3 at the worst and that's even factoring in an overtime loss to Florida 20-20 at the end of regulation. The offense clearly wasn't the problem, how many times have we hung 44 on a team like Georgia and LOST?! Oh well, coulda woulda shoulda....

Honestly, I feel like Clawson was a victim of the bad recruiting and also the meddling by Fulmer that happened at the end of his tenure. I feel like Sunseri was not only incompetent, but was actually trying to sabotage the defense this year.

Clawson has won 80 games as a Head Coach. Not an easy thing to do. Clawson and Tennessee both met at the wrong time in their lives. Bottom line!!!

x10000000000 dooley has to be number 1, plus dooley hired sal. they should fire the guy that hired hamilton just to kill this whole mess at the source.
