Is this CBP best coaching job?

Are you really saying that all 20 wins were against teams that we were much more talented? His first team over-achieved and had a good season. Our depth this year has consisted of 3 walk-on players, at least two of which have played in most every game.

Good question. Outside Kansas, what games did we win that you had penciled in as a loss going into it?

It still blows me away that we have so many Bruce haters in the Vol nation. 5 straight 20 win seasons speak for themselves.

Yea, it just proves that we all hate Pearl by saying that his first year was his best coaching job. What criticism. Get a clue, man.

It still blows me away that criticism of Pearl is not allowed. Heaven forbid somebody criticize BP.

Sorry! I did not know that my question would be so hard for you.

I think CBP has done a good job with this group given the January mess he had to deal with. We have had a couple of bad losses, GA and USC, and a nice win over Kansas. Still have to play Fl there, Ky in TBA, and Miss State and Arkansas. Win those 4,(hoping), and 24-6 will be a very nice record heading into the dreaded SEC tourney. We never do well there. Why? Who knows. I do think the first year he was here was a tremendous job of taking a program that was as low as it could be and turning it around. With all of that being said, I do think there are those here that would be happy if Jerry Green were still coaching. No matter what CBP does they gripe and complain. I guess that is just their nature.

There is nothing in this thread that criticizes Pearl. Second, it is a flat out lie to suggest that anyone here is advocating for the return of Jerry Green.

Another vote for season 1. He took over a team that went 14-17 (I think) the year before and was picked 6th in the division preseason by nearly everybody.

I disagree. We have more talent now than we did then from top to bottom now. We play 9 people now; we played 7 people then, one of whom was Ryan Childress. We went from a losing record to a 2 seed in the 'AAs, and we swept the national champion.

This year, we've been destroyed by UGA, who will be lucky to make the NIT.
We've been destroyed by USC before any of the suspensions even took place, and Vandy has destroyed us twice. Our lone big time claim is beating Kansas. Other than that, if we have played a team close to the same talent level as us, we have lost.

Therefore, from an objective perspective, the first year was much more impressive than this year, imo.

My sentifments, exactly.

Name one person on here that has said they'd be happy if Green were still here coaching.

Both sides of this argument are guilty of hyperbole. The Pro-Pearl crowd accuses those criticizing him of a) not being fans, b) wanting an inferior coach, c) not giving CBP credit for anything. The Anti-Pearl crowd accused the other side of loving CBP unconditionally and touting him as the greatest coach ever. I think that both sides need to calm down a bit.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. Pearl has brought the program up a notch from where it was, but we have not reached the next level in his 5 years yet. Until he gets elite players in the program, that will not happen. I don't have as much of a problem with the X's and O's of his coaching as I do with recruiting and player development. At the same time, he has done a good job at UT so far.

Pearl's strong-suit certainly seems to be "coaching them up," rather than "developing." (See: first season, at Memphis two years ago, Kansas, Florida during their championship run...). He has won some HUGE games, especially when you take the talent gap into consideration.

I agree. Pearl has done some great things, but he will never be considered an elite coach until he starts developing these high ranked recruits and makes deeper tourney runs.

There were certain aspects of X's and O's (press, out of bounds sets, etc.) that he seemed to excel at but he definitely didn't seem to be able to translate it into success in a half court set. At least this year I've seen an improvement with half court defense. Half court O ususally still makes me want to throw things at my TV, unfortunately.

As usual, those who hate Pearl or are 'expressing their right' to be critical of him don't like it when someone who is happy with the turn in basketball suggest that perhaps the haters would rather have Jerry Green or Buzz Ball Back in town. That is a straight up TRUTH. Go back to winning 12 or 13 games and only having 8000 people in the building. Because that is what it was before CBP. Another TRUTH the haters like to ignore.
