Is this true? Justine transferring

Y'all go look at Mulkey and Staley's coaching records by year. Staley didn't even make the tourney for like 3 year at SC and lost 13 games her last year at Temple. Took Mulkey like 11 years at Baylor to win a Natty. In my opinion, there was a shift this year that we haven't seen in awhile. The team could've folded and didn't, ended up beating the nation champion and returns a strong core of players. I was hoping good things for Pissott but she's hardly amongst the highest profile players in the portal. I'm not silly enough to count Kelly and Co out and I'm a little worried about recruiting. But, I've also gambled with hiring decisions to make sure I got people that fit my team. Hopefully it's the same thing here. I'm excited to see what happens. I'd love to see them back on top.
Kim won a NC at Baylor in her 5th year as a HC

Have we seen an official announcement on Justine? And could it be that she's just testing tbe waters?
The official announcement will be when she actually finds a place to transfer. Until then she is just in the portal. Some players that get in do not transfer. Hopefully we may find out more about the reason in the next few days.

Yes but how we gonna get Tess, Sara, and a few others their minutes. This seemed to be a problem last season that Coach Kellie actually admitted to in her last press conference. I think going forward her strategy of who plays will be different at least she seemed to indicate that when she spoke recently.

You are so right -- If I had a starting line-up of Bueckers, Clark, Reese, Jackson, and Betts, my first though would definitely be, Oh no! how do I find playing time for.....

Staley pretty much BUILT the SC program. She didn't INHERIT it. Teams lose talent all the time. But, context matters here. The replacements will have to come via the portal...again. Or you may have others in the class. Which also isn't the case. If you think HS recruits don't see what is happening to frosh at TN, then you're not realistic. Pissott is a loss. No doubt about that. I'm not buying the defense excuse either. I can give you a list of average SEC defenders longer than this thread. Or the standard..."she's not SEC material." Please stop. I'm neutral on Harper as a coach. But, she needs to do a deep dive into her vision for the program and come up with a solid way towards that vision. Looks like she's treading water and hoping someone (out of the portal) is going to keep her from drowning. She often speaks about culture change. Problem is that starts from the ground up...not with portal players.
Post of the day with a few hours left in the day. Clubhouse leader with honesty, no fluff and a challenge of self reflection to CKH.

Re: Transfers...

This is the new normal. All of the current NC-winning coaches have had transfers, often of highly-prized recruits. Some long-time, highly-respected coaches have had as many as five players leave in the same year including starters. In some cases, the star of the team is leaving for other opportunities. Some see incoming star recruits or transfers who will take minutes from them or push them into a backup role (or delay their anticipated starter roles). Then there are just situations that didn't work out as expected.

The extra Covid year and lax transfer rules has just rewritten the script entirely. Imagine how many transfers would have occurred during the past if the current rules had been in place. Remember that we got Marciniak from Notre Dame but also had our own starting point guard leave mid-season during a different year when we were undefeated and ranked #1 when Parker was here.

Stuff happens.

In today's environment there is absolutely no reason to treat the portal as some kind of poor second option compared to the holy grail of high school recruiting. As Volfan2012 noted, the smart move may be to get incoming sophomores out of the portal because they 1) have some experience and a college track record) 2) and a disincentive to transfer again. .

I wanted Kellie to give JP more opportunity during the season but the other shoe has not dropped. If in fact, kellie has landed another big fish transfer who will push Justine further down the depth chart, this whole scenario will look a whole lot different.

I disagree. You need a balance. One is a short term solution and the other isn't. In either case, you're relying on them to build the pillar of your program. There are very few BIG fish in the portal. And some look bigger than they are. Most sophomores are in the portal for the same reason Pissott is in there. Haven't played enough or just feel a disconnect from whence they came. I'm not saying dismiss the portal, but it can't be your main dish....and certainly not repeatedly.

I pointed one key flaw in Justine's game during the pre-season (and got flamed for it) but I think it is relevant to understanding some of her travails. First off, defense seemed to be the big liability that kept her off the floor particularly early in the season but, on the offensive side, Justine shot a "push shot" with a shoulder level release. That release transforms a 6-4 player into a 5-8 player. If Justine had a more classic high release, like Tess or Rickea or Caitlin Clark, at her height she could have shot over anyone even if being guarded tight (like Caitlin Clark). It also makes a much quicker release.

Then, JP would not have been easy to close down or have to run a mile to find open space to get her shot off. It is hard to re-engineer a shot but the push shot is a anachronism in today's women's game.View attachment 546147
Great point then and now; however, Very few freshmen arrive as defensive specialists and shooting with a high release is another acquired technique. Barnes regularly faces these challenges and regularly develops his kids. These are developmental hurdles. I don’t buy that her upside didn’t merit more court time.

By the way, I don’t think criticism of our staff is hate of the Lady Vols. No one posts here who doesn’t also support the Lady Vols. GBO!

Something to be said for accountability. It’s not negative if you call it out.

why do we keep recruiting players with no lateral movement and can't defend?

You've hit it: This is the issue with Pissott, Puckett, Darby, maybe others. Darby averaged 7.4 points a game--not enough given the baskets she gave up on the other end, but without her we would have had virtually no 3-point shooting. And she shot the 3 well--at 41 percent.

How weak was our overall 3-point shooting? Darby made 70 for the season; after her, our next highest total was Puckett with 26. Not good. As a team we made 198 TREYS and shot 31 percent from the 3 line--not good enough. Virginia Tech, to name one opponent, made nearly 100 more 3s than we did this year--and shot it at a 35 percent clip. Indiana made 229 3s at 37%. Ohio State made 258 3s at 34%.

But as mentioned, it's no good if your three-point shooters are not good all-around players who can move, dribble the basketball and defend, as your negative plays will offset your scoring.

She did not get on the court much as she should have but she still was least prepared when she got o it. Somebody will take her maybe one of the Iowas or something east but she will have to prepare way more than she did while here. Liked her but she has to do what she has to do.

Samantha Williams has been a huge waste of money since she was hired.
Except that time she got Rickea Jackson, twice. And Jillian Hollingshed. And Destinee Wells. And whoever the mystery visit is. Otherwise, I want my money back.

Obviously, everyone knows this and they are acting on it. Which is why the last batch of recruits, Jackson, Hollingshead, Wells, are not that type of player. Clearly they are upgrading the talent, especially with perimeter speed. Which is why Pissiot left. And why Puckett, Darby and Striplin will be slotted as very important role players. Those players are welcome to improve and challenge for bigger roles.

Not sure why we keep beating this drum and acting like they're not trying, and succeeding, at making the upgrade everyone is yelling for.

Were SC and Baylor powerhouse or legendary programs when Staley and Mulkey took over?
