This is why I've been saying for years on this board that people need to understand that the tournament is almost always about size, rebounding, and defense. A team can be hot from the 3-point line for only so many games and if they are soft in the front court they will be exposed, usually sooner rather than later.
IMO the officiating in the tournament is usually a lot looser in the paint. You have to have size and they have to be able to take a punch and still take charge of a game.
My biggest gripe about Donovan has always been his propensity to recruit in his own image. Scrappy guards are great. And they can give you some memorable moments. And its also true that a banging center may not produce as many acrobatic thrills as a short guy who runs around and hits from 30 feet.
But that is what wins in the tournament. How we happened to wake up a few years ago with Brewer and Noah and sneak in there like that I still don't quite understand. But I know that until we replicate that approach we are doomed to Sweet 16 as the top prize we can hope for year in and year out.
All of this.
