It's Done - Strong will be announced [unconfirmed]

I don't profess to be an expect on anything much less college football coaches but I just can't get excited over Charlie Strong as our head football coach. His record was 10-2 this year but one of those wins was in overtime and five others were by 7 points or less AND that was against a weak schedule of Little East teams and a few other patsies. Prior to this year his record was 14-12 barely better than Dooley's first two years. What am I missing here?

You're right. Let's ignore all coaches who succeed at a crappy program and go 10-2 in their 3rd year. Also, we should ignore any recruiting boost he would provide. Gruden or bust.

More and more I think we will end up with some offense coordinator of some mid major State Teacher's College that went 6-6 last year.

Sad what UT athletic teams have become. No longer a source of pride like it used to be.

You're missing a hot girl in your avatar... yeesh....

Like the Arkansas hiring... just expect the unexpected. I believe there may be a rhyme to the reason... just give Hart a little time and see what "unexpected" direction he goes. We may be in for a great surprise... or a major letdown. Let's see.

I hope you're right about the great surprise. I often wonder if coaches are reluctant to come to UT because of some of our fans unrealistic expectations.

10 wins is 10 wins but speculate for a moment and ask yourself this, would Dooley have won 10 games with that team? Strong, across the board for football reasons, is an upgrade over Dooley which is what the result of coaching searches should be. You should always seek to bring in a better coach than the one you just let go and Strong no doubt fits that criteria. One last thought: Strong won in a weak conference. Dooley couldn't even do that before he was hired here.

i called him and asked "what's up with all these people saying Strong staying put at UL?" and he said "all i can tell you is it's still a go, and in fact will happen sooner tomorrow than expected. transportation has been moved up." I asked for more, he said no, people have been prying around looking for leaks in the AD.

Looks like they were WRONG! Unless you can get a PR TIME???

Im having trouble that this is what it has come to guys, there was once a day when coaches would have beat down the door to get in the HC office at UT. I just dont get it?? Fan Base is strong, money is there, facilities are strong, ADept. is committed....What's the deal??

Forget all these weak names. I would take tressel in a heartbeat and miss a bowl game. We haven't been to one in the last two years. Might as well take the plunge while the fan base is expecting it. How many fans would be excited if we had a year even similar to what OSU has had this year and missed a bowl? It would just be a sign for what's to come. Strong=Liberty bowl. Fedora=Liberty bowl. Tressel or Perrino = contention for BCS games and championships.

Sorry to break it to you, but we're not exactly the best football team right now, and that's putting it nicely.

Fan Base is rabid and irrational. Expectations are unrealistic. Competition is brutal. AD is broke. Thin in-state recruiting base...What's the deal??

Fixed your post. What's not to like?

Losing. It's really that simple.

Well yea, My father was a HC for twenty years in High School. He coached at two different schools..took a winless team one year to 12-1 the next and so on...Most coaches ive been around, and I grew up around them say its the challenge. So if its true that "coaches coach", why are none interested in turning around this program. I mean if you succeed were talking rock star status in KVIlle.

That was tough to read. High school isn't exactly the SEC. There's a lot more to coaching an SEC team than just the challenge.

Fan base is strong? Other schools fill their stadiums even in bad years.... even when they are disgusted with their coach. Neyland looked half empty vs UK.

Yes. Dooley earned his firing this year... but a significant portion of the fanbase ignored the condition of the program when he arrived and wanted him fired after only two seasons. Prospective coaches see those kinds of things.... and DO NOT LIKE THEM.

Many of these same fans who chose not to support the team in hard times will turn around and blame someone else for UT having to settle for a "bad hire". They'll start attacking and downgrading the new guy before he does anything then will harp on any failure as proof they were right. They'll keep insisting that someone be "fired"... and people will be fired... and the program will not get better.

To a great extent.... these fans will get what they deserve if UT does fall into a cycle of bad coaches and bad results. Criticism is fine... better than fine... it proves you have high standards. The constant complaining, negative assumptions, nitpicking, and general impatience... is a cancer.
