It's Done - Strong will be announced [unconfirmed]

That was tough to read. High school isn't exactly the SEC. There's a lot more to coaching an SEC team than just the challenge.

Really? High School isnt the SEC, thanks for the info! Its a precursor to a point. Arkansas won four games this year, stadium is dunk, program history is what?? and they just landed what most sports networks consider the best coach in the big ten. Although personally i consider Urban the best in the big ten. What im saying is its the art of the deal..and our guys in AD are inept at the deal....Case in point Cuonzo Martin....C'mon man!!

Word this morning is that the Vols have offered Mike Gundy per Bruce Feldman. I'm personally not happy with this hire if we get him. Does anyone realize his team has never had a defense rank higher than 82nd in the country?

To me this sounds like the equivalent of Michigan hiring Rich Rodriguez. A program that historically has a good defense and goes after an offensive guru. I pray it's not true.

Not the home run hit we all wanted.

The Homerunners stayed HOME. If this is the hire it's better than where we were. Gruden was never coming and many looked foolish in thinking he was really going to come here. The other big fish weren't leaving their jobs to come to UT. I sincerely believe Coach Strong will show progress once he get's his thumb print on this program. Right now UT needs to make a hire and soon. Recruiting is essential to the life line of a college football team.

Shut it down boys. Strong is staying put. There's still some room over in the Gruden thread, but spots are filling fast. Will the last one out get the lights?

Soon.

Well yea, My father was a HC for twenty years in High School. He coached at two different schools..took a winless team one year to 12-1 the next and so on...Most coaches ive been around, and I grew up around them say its the challenge. So if its true that "coaches coach", why are none interested in turning around this program. I mean if you succeed were talking rock star status in KVIlle.

It has nothing to do with what UT has to offer a coach as much as them seeing a coach that truly gave his all for TN, and truly saw this job as his "Dream Job," run out of town. Heck the son of a legendary SEC coach to boot. Im sure you understand how all this is looked at by coaches from your background.

This program was in horrible shape when DD took over. He was given some time and he did well/bad in the things that the everyday fan doesn't see, but the program still has many issues. Probably still worse than any other program. Penn St and Arky programs were in bad shape but it was more just a quick hit. UTs program had started going down yrs ago so there were and still are long standing issues that are needing to be fix. No quick fixes. Things get fixed and then others that were unknown pop up. It's the nature of complete/complex rebuilds. Something no other major program can compare to right now. Why leave the stable program they have built or are accustom to??? Especially for a hot mess with a warm coaches seat from day one???

Coaches know this and are asking these questions. Heck Hart even said things were worse than he expected/knew from his interview process. Would he have taken the job if he did??? Who knows. Coaches see how impatient this fan base is and look at the actual situation and it's not hard to see why it's sooooo hard for us to be considered a "Dream Job" by any coach. Heck I'd be hesitant to take the job if I were a coach, but I'd still do it to help my alma mater. I'd even do it for free, other than for room and board of course. But IMO(as a fan, alum, and professional) bringing this program back to continuous stability and success is no easy feat.

Fan base is strong? Other schools fill their stadiums even in bad years.... even when they are disgusted with their coach. Neyland looked half empty vs UK.

Yes. Dooley earned his firing this year... but a significant portion of the fanbase ignored the condition of the program when he arrived and wanted him fired after only two seasons. Prospective coaches see those kinds of things.... and DO NOT LIKE THEM.

Many of these same fans who chose not to support the team in hard times will turn around and blame someone else for UT having to settle for a "bad hire". They'll start attacking and downgrading the new guy before he does anything then will harp on any failure as proof they were right. They'll keep insisting that someone be "fired"... and people will be fired... and the program will not get better.

To a great extent.... these fans will get what they deserve if UT does fall into a cycle of bad coaches and bad results. Criticism is fine... better than fine... it proves you have high standards. The constant complaining, negative assumptions, nitpicking, and general impatience... is a cancer.

Great post as always my friend! :hi: Wish more people would understand/see things the way we few on here do.

i called him and asked "what's up with all these people saying Strong staying put at UL?" and he said "all i can tell you is it's still a go, and in fact will happen sooner tomorrow than expected. transportation has been moved up." I asked for more, he said no, people have been prying around looking for leaks in the AD.

This clown won't be back with his Strong BS!

Well observed!! Fulmer was done wrong, after 98' they gave him ten years and the program was losing all discipline. Thats what happens when you start bringin in the 5* recruits and they're instantly given the keys to the city. I agree Dooley did improve the program from the PAC 12 crap Kiffin brought in that had no chance for sustained success here, just hope our hire is step in the right direction instead of another backwards leap...

I dont want to get too deep into this, just this first paragraph.

Dooley was not "run out of town". He made crappy coaching decisions. I put it mildly because this is a family show, but it was much worse than that. I have several friends who coach in colleges across the country, and yes, even in the SEC. I got text and email messages from EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM after the Mizzery game and they almost all said the same thing, word for word: "WTF was Dooley thinking? That one will cost him his job. When he is fired, he can look back at those last 27 seconds and know that this is where he lost his job"

Dooley is a great guy. I dont think anyone would doubt that. But he made some terrible coaching moves, and at least one of them was inexcusable.

UT's not waiting till Thursday. There is a real concern that UL will indeed do all they can to keep Strong. The longer they wait, the more something can go wrong. Hence, the push to get this done ASAP.

The more this day moves on the more hope that gets taken away from me....your rumor is starting to look like one

dDooley was to UT as John L Smith was to Michigan State. JLS came in an righted the ship and cleaned up the problems left over from a coach that was in over his head (Bobby Williams, and had brought the program to new lows) Remind you of anyone? (LK??)

Dooley righted the ship and has prepared it for the next coach to do good things. It was time to move on.

I bet Derek Dooley is laughing his tail off at this coaching search. Haha

Who cares what Dooley is doing. We are all still laughing at the fact he was given the job when he was never qualified to start with and given a $5 million buyout.

Thanks. I agree fulmer was given wayyyyyy to much leeway after he won and he took advantage of it. Don't have hard feelings toward him as that's a natural human trait. Most would get comfortable like he did.

I hope we don't take a step back but honestly just don't see many legit actual options that can give us the warm fuzzy feeling that it'll be ok. Most will be pills to swallow with fingers crossed hoping for the best. At least he'll have a program better off than what DD walked into. Which is another thing to worry about cause not much room left in the "he took over a mess" argument. What my "warm seat from day 1" opinion is based on. The roster is light yrs ahead of where it was back then.

(Not sure if you are familiar with me but I was a Dooley guy til the end and believe he got a raw deal. Just so it's clear where Im coming from. I saw this mess we are going through right now and didn't want anything to do with it. :cray:)

Like dd or not...but I'm pretty sure many aren't laughing at him for the reason you proclaim. Pissed at him maybe but not actually laughing at him. Just a hunch....
