Its time to think about Diego Pavia

We are all giddy with excitement the way this weekend has gone. Win and we’re in, and that win need only come against little brother Vandy. In a sane year that would be a non issue.

But this is not a sane year. And Diego Pavia is the reason Vandy is not the Vandy of old. His ability to scramble, to delay, to turn broken plays into gains is Manziel-esque. He is an accurate passer with good vision on top of his scrambling ability, and he absolutely possesses the ability to derail our season hopes if we cannot find an answer for him.

We are the better of the two teams in terms of talent, size and speed. Carolina, who is not as good as us, went into Nashville last week and handled business against the dores. But in a season of chaos, I would be lying if this game against our old in state rival didn’t feel like a quintessential trap game.

The Vols need to come out focused and on a mission. No slow starts. Come hard after Pavia and spy him when you don’t. Step on their necks early and leave no hope that they can ruin our trip to the playoffs. Wouldn’t hurt to have the stands painted Big Orange either.

It'not a trap game because there is no 'next game' if UT doesn't take care of business next week.

I agree with the spy concept, because Pavia seems to do his most damage on the move, broken plays, etc. Reduce the chaos and make him a pocket passer and have gap integrity seems like the best way to deal with a player like that.

To be fair..this team has hardly looked "ready" when starting most SEC games this year..

That being said this probably isn't a game that I can turn off by the end of the third quarter if I wanted to without worrying but UT should win.
Maybe their “ready” is the results we’ve been getting. We’ve been winning and will be in the playoff with a victory. We might get the Miss State results, who knows.

The game I watched, only one, he didn’t look very fast to me. I forget who they played, they lost. But he just didn’t look good.

Clown comment.

Given their success this year, I would expect to see more Vandy fans. IMO the road games he have struggled in haven’t been due to fans or noise. We’ve never really looked lost or struggled to get plays in, etc.

We just simply haven’t performed great after traveling period.
But it's only 2 1/2 hours away 🤫 ;) There will probably be just as many UT fans as Vandy fans there!

Yeah a win is a win and I'm good with where the team is so far this year even though they could probably be undefeated if they "showed up" a bit better on the road.

It was noted in the locker room yesterday that "Next week predicates this program's destiry" and that is pretty accurate.

Tennessee has been gifted a repreive and an opportunity to have a "Lazarus" season, but they do need to defeat a Vanderbilt team in Nashville, which has traditionally been the last game of the season for the better part of 60 years now, resulting in Vanderbilt's biggest game of the season when the regular season ends in Nashville.

Last time we took a Lazarus season into Nashville was 2016, when Tennessee was 4-3 in the conference and only needed to win against Vanderbilt to back into the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, with a mediocre season and record in tact. Butch Jones couldn't manage a win in Nashville that year and tumbled all the way to the Music City Bowl with the 4-4 conference record, pushing Auburn into the Sugar Bowl.

Lose Saturday and Tennessee finds itself in another pointless and meaningless bowl game, I'm hoping the offensive staff actually have a game plan against Vanderbilt and can scheme against a good but not great defense and Banks and our legacy baffoon Martinez can scheme to stop Diego when he leaves the pocket with some linebacker play that is better than what we have seen this season and a secondary that can close once the ball is carried past the line of scrimmage.

And our defense in those same games? Clown comment to say we haven’t shown up in SEC games.
I'm talking about the entire team. They (defense) are the reason this team has won as many games as they have. Lots of people were pissed at the defense after Georgia but the offense went anemic in the 2nd half instead of the first half. Regardless, I'll take a win no matter how it happens.

I remember several years ago on a cold Saturday night went went to see the vols in Nashville led by Butch Jones and Josh Dobbs to take on the commode doors. Win and go to the Sugar Bowl. We chocked and got our tails whipped.

You're absolutely right, and that is completely relevant to this team and situation. Excellent point, and hopefully Josh will show the team the film from that game as a precautionary measure. It's a good thing someone thought to bring this up because we certainly don't want to chock again.
