Jalen Hurd potential

I guess you do not read my post. Good kid, know him very well. I guess you know why he left MBA before going to BHS? I guess you know why he left Goodpasture before going to MBA? I know the kid. He did bust his rear last year when the team was winning, never said he didnt, but when he was hurt and could not play anymore he was not there to try to encourage his team. I have known his family since he was in the 3rd grade and I really do hope he does well. I am not just a Bama fan, I care about what happens to my kids friends. I really think he will be used as a DB before he plays RB. He played the DB very well and with his size/speed would make a great defensive player.

To answer your questions, yes and yes. It appears by your posts on here though that you're sorely mistaken or have assummed to know something that you don't.

Just because your kids go to school with another kid doesn't mean you know anything about them. If you genuinely knew Art, Tara & Jalen, you wouldn't be on here blazing him because the people that are really close to them knows why Jalen was absent from a couple of games.

And when Beech was "winning"?? Remember they never lost with JH in the game - including the 8 games "he played injured" last year. They stopped winning when he stopped playing - when he stopped "running the ball" - not playing DB.

Your 6'2 Yeldon won't have ish on our 6'3 Hurd.

Aahhhhh.... that's what it is. It's all just a big misunderstanding.....you're just in the wrong thread. You want the "Is Jalen Hurd just a bit too tall to play RB" thread. Whew! There for a minute I thought we had an issue....

Matt Forte(Bears RB) 6'2" 220#
Le'Veon Bell(Steelers RB) 6'1" 244#
Arian Foster (Texans) 6'1" 227#
Steven Jackson (Falcons) 6'2' 240#
Adrian Peterson (Vikes) 6'1" 217 #

These guys are not as tall but I'm just wanting to prove a point.

Cordarrelle Patterson is a good example of athleticism for a guy with similar size to Hurd. I don't know if Hurd is near as gifted , but I certainly hope so.

This guy knows better. His beloved Bama team has 2 of the bigger more talented RBs in the country....

Yeldon 6'2 220
Henry 6'3 238

Tide, we are all glad that you "care" so much about Hurd as one of your "kid's friends." Further, since you care so much and are so concerned about the things you are insinuating because Hurd has played at 3 different schools, I am sure you have gone to Hurd and his family and met with them in person to get all of this worked out before he goes away to college.

Thanks again for your caring concern for the youth of America.

I wouldn't be as concerned about attending my high school games either rather than focused on my future if I were Hurd. Your logic is stupid as any player with a bright future would be much more focused on his college play and rehab at this point following an injury. He is getting here in the spring as well which gives him even more incentive to focus on what is going to happen at UT, people that talk like they are coaches evaluating players, aren't coaches for a reason. Just stay in the stands, enjoy the game, and let our coaches do their job.

You think he'll be used as a DB? BEFORE he gets a shot at runningback, on top of that? You sure you're talking about Hurd?

It's not a knock in the kid. It would be similar to putting Peyton in the spread option.

Why? Most of our running plays this year were straight ahead handoffs or delayed handoffs after the rb took a deliberate step or 2 to either side. How is this going to hinder Hurd who clearly has excellent feet given his speed and quickness. Am I missing something?

I'm really worried about how the delayed hand-offs will hamper Hurd. From what I've seen, he's a downhill guy who needs to hit the hole quick and speed through it. Delaying the hand-off the way we have, seems to give the defense more time to get in to the backfield and seems to favor more of a start and stop and change directions guy, which Hurd definitely isn't. I think most running attacks are better in this league when you hit the hole quickly and don't waste alot of time in the backfield. I would hate it if we misused a talent like Hurd simply because we're so committed to a system like this.

Understand your points, they're reasonable. But I think Hurd has very good burst. If you get a chance, watch his 40 yd dash at the SPARQ where he was laser timed at 4.37. Very good explosion at the start. I believe that translates.

Hopefully Hurd can live up to his billing and if it's shown that certain formations fit his running style better that the staff will adjust. Sure hope so...this program desperately needs a very high level of success from Jalen.

It's not really about burst though. His burst looks excellent. In the highlights I've seen he really seems to hit the hole at full speed. I hope that's an asset we can utilize. I'm not slagging his speed. I think it's impressive. But I haven't seen any evidence he's a shifty lateral guy (and some of those guys aren't all that fast straight ahead anyway) and would doubt that he is. Anyway, we can probably agree that shiftiness isn't his main asset, right?

But how many good running teams in the SEC spend so much time in the backfield handing the ball off? It seems like everyone gets their ball carrier to the hole faster than we do.

When you are taking that kind of time and essentially inviting the defense into the backfield, it seems like your most productive running options are counters or runs designed to go around the defenses' push up the middle. I question how effective those methods can be in this league anyway, but I certainly don't think lateral running and dancing around in the backfield is ideally suited to Hurd's skillset.

Agree. He seems like more of a Lane-like foot in the ground and go guy. As opposed to Neal. I will say I saw Hurd make a really nice, quick lateral cut in the Beech-Sta Camp game that was televised. Took it about 30 yds down the right sideline. Maybe someone else like Vol74 who has seen him play a lot can provide a better take on his lateral ability. I've only seen him online and in that one game.

Most do not realize he jump cut and lateral movement abilities. Most people do not realize how low he can get and his hip strength. Typically, guys his size can't do these things - it's understandable. Yet, he's not everyone. Most people don't shatter multiple state records either. It's just a situation where he's unique and most people won't believe it until they see it.

Totally agree... someone today was telling me about how he runs upright. I told them to watch his highlights and notice how he runs with good body lean through the line of scrimmage and doesn't get upright until he breaks into the clear.

Cannot wait until he gets his opportunity to show people what he can do this spring. :good!:

I don't think Hurd has HAD to show a lot of what you're talking about. He was VERY successful at the style of running you describe. Does that even remotely suggest he can't in fact be adept (or at least learn to be) at running laterally? Not one bit. At this point however I think it'd be hard to suggest it's been demonstrated to any great degree to this point.

Let's fact it though...speculating about what will happen at the SEC level is just that, speculation. I won't lie though, it's really hard not to have high hopes for this one.

I agree. The whole "he's too tall and runs upright" garbage is just that IMO. Even if he did run upright, the idea that he couldn't be taught, very quickly, to lower his pad level when anticipating or creating contact is a bit ridiculous to me. Glad to get the perspectives of those who've seen him play a lot. You just don't put up the numbers Hurd has, run the times he has and win the camp MVPs he has vs the nation's best recruits without being an elite athlete. I think he'll be special....at running back.

As he watched his future team run plays this season, did he get a feel on how he fits?...I feel that what we saw this season was an ill-fitting concert of running backs and O-line personnel. Imo Butch's offense is adjustable in spacing and positioning to accentuate individual strengths...so you don't have to clone Isiah Pead every year...statistics wise we had a productive year...I just wondered if Jalen had discussed such things with the staff

He is going to be a special kind of player. It's been a long time since a running back at UT has had the kind of impact he is going to have. I can't wait to see it!!!!!!!1

Just to be clear, I'm not questioning Hurd's abilities. But I think that this scheme will have to change to take full advantage of the best assets of his game. I hope the staff will recognize this and be willing to adapt to their player's skills.

He will be fine. Patriots use big backs in spread. Eddie george has said he wouldve loved to play in a spread. Petrino had Knile Davis running out of a spread. Besides, the staff still could implement more under center stuff.
