Jalen Smith LB to Transfer Portal

The portal and early recruiting period are really dumb timing from the NCAA.
I agree it's a bad situation. But what's the solution? I haven't heard anyone propose anything that makes sense, specifically with the portal timeline.

Freshman never know what they're thinking. Who benefits? Spillman?

In order to enroll in their new school, which will likely start their semester around Jan 6, the portal timeline essentially forces them to declare now and start the process. It's a sad reality of the state of college football.
I thought they had a certain period of days after their team's season ended to declare and transfer.

wow that is surprising and disappointing. Other teams poaching or is something else going on? We gotta fix this system yall.
I don't follow recruiting closely but if you look back and see who he picked over to come to UT. I bet one on those 2 teams kept a relationship and when he saw the pecking order and timeline, he had a family member to reach out. Thats why they never quit recruiting now days. It's always been dirty but now even with a lot transparent still a lot of back door stuff.

They do, but if they want to enroll at the other school in time to go through Spring Ball, they have to do it before that school’s add/drop deadline. Theoretically if you make the championship, your guys can’t transfer and play Spring Ball

If you want to play early at your new school, which I'm assuming is his priority, then you'd better be at spring practice. Sure, it's not a requirement, but it's like "voluntary workouts" in sports. If you want a spot, you'd better be there.
Fair. That’s why I didn’t play towards the end of my high school career (basketball). I took the words “voluntary workout” literally and “applied myself” elsewhere.

was a step too slow a lot times this year, was gonna get passed up by spillman & maybe perlotte or harmon next year anyways. surprised he didn’t stay for the playoffs though.
This.

If you really watched #39 Jalen Smith this season, he lacks speed and change of direction (quickness/fluidity) to be a higher end SEC LB. He reminded me a lot of Elijah Herring.

He also missed some run fits, and I think missed some reads. But he could have cleaned that up with more experience.

Losing Pili was the big blow to our LB corps this year. Smith’s departure is not great for the playoff run, but hopefully Telander & now Spillman will get the job done.

Ouch. Strange that these guys aren't staying through the playoffs. Not going to partake in the celebration come January.

if they want to get to another school in January, they have to hit portal NOW.
