Stokes is gonna be so good, we're gonna be comparing him to himself. So I guess he'll be the best post player since Jarnell Stokes :)

That would be because your book only goes back 10-15 years. If it wasn't for google and this sight you'd have no idea who Bernard king was.

10-15 years is being awfully generous. Didn't this guy say he was in high school?

Hell my first hand knowledge of SEC basketball barely goes back 15 years.

i was giving him the absolute most credit possible so he couldnt argue it. i figured if he's 18 or 19 he'd claim being a basketball expert at the age of 4 so id cover all my basis this way.

Not old enough to remember the Ernie and Bernie show but from everything my father has told me along with old footage he's got a long way to go to reach Bernie

I'm also not dumb enough to crown him the best thing since sliced bread before he's even had time to find himself orange shoes.

He's the best player ever in the SEC. The only player that could rival him is Maravich.

That being said, Stokes is the best talent we've had in the post since Ellis. If he turns out to be that good, we will be seeing some deep tournament runs in the near future

Lots can change between now and the need of his career here I think people are just hesitant to say how good he will be after one game. If janell goes pro after 1 1/2 years obviously what he accomplished here will have been limited. Does he have the talent to be one of the best ever to come through, absolutely. If he is here though only for a year and a half it will be impossible for anyone o consider him as the best ever. He can have a monster year next year 25 15 and 3 a game but if he leaves he won't eclipse some of the others like Houston on king.

Fair enough, but we can still talk about how he stacks up.

Well, quite honestly I think it's close impossible to even create such a list. Comparing guards who played with no 3 point arc to modern players, etc. No, it has nothing to do with bias. In many cases, people try to rank players with a flawed bias, which is taking into account what a player did "after" their time in the SEC. There are young kids running around this board right now (a few UK fans) who have no clue who BK even is, and thinks that players like Delk, Walker, and so on hung the moon.

If anything, I would probably bump Mashburn to an 11-15 spot replace him with Chapman.

Jumps like a brother, shoots like your mother. That's going way back.

I might actually agree with this. Chapman was really really good.

I still don't understand the "shoots like your mother" part of that. My mom can't shoot.

BTW Big Blue posters, you do know King only lost to the Wildcats 1 time in his career.....
That was the game someone at Memorial Gymnasium threw a ciagarette butt in his hair after he lost as a freshman. After that, BK said he would never lose to KY again. He was right. Phenomenal talent that would have gone down as one of the top 10 NBA players of all-time if not for his ACL injury.

I'd say top 20 without the injury.

Still a nice career, though. Bill Simmons has him at #58 all time.

I guess it just depends on how the question was meant. The best talent to come through here, or best player at this university. I kind of see that as being able to provide 2 different answers. If jarnell is here a yea and a half and goes pro and has a good long career, he will have been the best vol to come through since bk.(Tobias could compete as well) but he would have not put his name in the record books and probably wouldn't go down as one of the all time greats, if that make sense. If your talking best at the university or for the university then he would probably need to stay 3 years minimum to accomplish a lot of the things he would need to. I hope that makes sense, it sounded good in my head.

Bernard King??? For those of us that were around to watch Bernard play, can you think of anyone else the Vols have had since BK that would rival what I think Stokes is going to bring to the table? Sure, we've only seen him play 17 minutes, but that's all it has taken for me to think he may be the best since Bernard, who IMO is one of the top 2-3 players to ever play in the SEC.
He may be the best since King or Dale Ellis, but I don't see Stokes being the scorer that King and Ellis were. King, when all is said and done, may be the greatest to ever play the game at Tennessee.

1. dont hold your breath on stanton being the starting pg next year. safe bet is golen is the start the next 2 years.

2. we will not be bringing in another pg next year that is pretty much a guarantee.

3. chris jones will not be eligible to play for a d1 school until the year of 2013. seeing as how we already have the pg we want for 2013 committed the chance that jones ends up here as well is VERY small.
Travon Landry is not the point guard Chris Jones is. I wish Martin would at least try to recruit him again.

Have you seen Landry play? They are 2 complete different styles from my understanding. Jones is a score first guy who can distribute, while Landry is a pass first guy who can score, simply put. Both are probably upgraded over what we have, I don't have a problem with jones just don't see him here. IMO i think ccm wants to cut ties with pearl, jones ensure references to pearl for atleast 2 more years. Also, I don't think jones is the type of PG that ccm typically prefers. Read his profile and usually defense is not mentioned anywhere, Landry on the other hand is frequently talked about as a tenacious and lock down defender who likes playing defense as much if not more than offense. That is something you won't see written about jones.

You do know that one of Martins first priorities was to meet with Jones and reaffirm his committment to UT, before everything went down? Just wondering.
