I lived in Texas and traveled a good portion of the state during my years there. Here is what everyone either doesnt know or fails to realize. At least 50% (probably more) of the state is true Texas Longhorn fans. They will never, under any circumstances, consider going or sending their kid to A&M. IF their son is not offered by Texas, their son may go to Baylor, Tech, OU etc or out of state, anywhere but not to A&M. It works the same for a kid who was raised an Aggie towards Texas. Kids from Aggie families dont end up at Texas PERIOD.
OU has a large loyal following (especially around Dallas area)and they despise the Aggies, just not as deep as Texas. Aggies and Aggie fans make up about 25-30% of the state.
Now in recruiting, A&M isnt going to recruit a kid who's family is loyal burnt orange or Crimson & cream. They can recruit kids who favor the aggies, dont have a close allegience or fans of other Texas schools. This reduces their "talent pool" considerably even in Texas. This is why since the days of Bear Bryant, A&M has been a consistent "inconsistent" winner with probation history despite having coaches like Emory Ballard, Jackie Sherrill, Mike Sherman, etc. The most successful coaches there have won but ended up on probation. The others have underachieved.
I hear many football experts talk about A&M and how they are a new power. I do think they can win but not a long term consistent winner or domination of the SEC in periods like Bama & Florida have had regardless of who their coach is. JMO.
