I’m curious to know what Banks did that made Heupel suspend him against South Carolina?
It had to be bad.
Nobody here really knows. There are several variants of a story going around. These stories are basically about Banks and Hooker having some sort of disagreement.
This disagreement may or may not have involved fighting, may or may not have been partly or mostly about NIL, may or may not have involved stepping on the power T and not doing push-ups (team rule), and may or may not have involved Milton breaking things up.
Oh, and Milton did so either by playing peacemaker or doing something in between getting in the middle to breaking Banks’ jaw or pinning him against the wall. Some then assuming the defense intentionally mutinied once he was suspended. One variant has Heupel discipline Banks and Hooker unfairly, which is claimed to impacted the defensive players.
The story probably has some element of truth. Which parts are true and what are exaggerations is unclear. The real problem is people assume some or all of these details and further assume that the locker room dust up is the reason he was suspended.
Plenty of young kids fight in locker rooms and it doesn’t usually end up with players throwing games. If you follow the tree of assumptions to some of the worst branches you get a picture that looks really bad, but that is a lot of assumptions given so many stories exist about what happened all of which are second hand accounts at best.
It’s very possible even if some version of this occurred it was quickly moved past and the decision to suspend Banks was based on something else entirely. That doesn’t absolve him of responsibility but the fact is that even if the worst version of all these things IS true he is not solely responsible for the loss.
Coaches had to fail to address the situation adequately and get their players properly focused. Players had to fail at playing up to their ability. There is plenty of blame to go around no matter what the truth of events really is.
I don’t think there was a mutiny but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were distractions. What I will say is that if the defense cannot function well enough to not give up 63 points because one guy didn’t play and the backup can’t do the job decently that speaks to a need for better training and recruiting at that position.
