Jermod McCoy is the best corner since....? And the best overall DB since....?

I don't know who to compare him to its been so long since we've seen a corner play like him but I sure am glad we got him, he is legit.

I watched Jabari Greer, Jonathan Wade, Cam Sutton all take their lumps against Florida or Alabama. Terry Fair as well.

All NFL CBs.

They “might” be more athletic? Might test better, but on the field, none off them EVER performed as well as McCoy.

7 games in he should be the leading candidate for Thorpe Award imo

A two-part question obviously. I think he's a better corner than Alontae or Bryce Thompson (both of who were excellent corners for us) by a wide margin. Who have we had in the last decade+ thats been better?

To that same note, who have we had in the defensive backfield at all since Eric Berry that's as good as McCoy?

I'll hang up and listen.

I was thinking maybe Cameron Sutton.

Sutton was a lockdown corner from his freshman year and he played on some really really bad Vol teams. He tackled against the run extremely well and he rarely ever missed a game due to injury. Also he was a threat every time he returned a punt

Best DB since Eric Berry. Best CB since ever??? I'm too young to remember Tennessee football before 2001. But I would say he's the best since then. Only guy in the convo with him is Cam Sutton and I think he's proven to be better thus far.

Also it should be noted that Rickey Gibson isn't too far behind him either. Rickey is behind Cam Sutton as the 3rd best CB since '01.
McCoy & Gibson have the potential to give us the best corners in the nation next season.

Honestly, McCoy looks better than Sutton. I think he's our best CB since I don't know when.

I'll get flamed here for this, but Alontae Taylor was overrated when he was here. Wasn't a bad player, but was overrated. Never thought he lived up to his potential, which could have been coaching. He had that blazing fast 40 time at the combine but never seemed to play that fast.
Wasn't he there on the sidelines last night in the green coat?

Deon Grant checks both questions off.

Dale played safely at UT.

Deon Grant checks both questions off.
Maybe. Just maybe. The best FS ever at UT. Bobby Majors was a real badass at that position. So was Eddie Brown after him. Lots of good/great after them at that position until Dale Carter came to UT. He was an all-Pro in the NFL as a man-to-man, cover corner. Grant roamed center field a little better

Gibril Wilson is at the top of the list of best defensive backfield players Vols have ever had.
I liked your post because he was a gamer at UT and played in the NFL like a couple of dozen or so DBs have from UT. That being said, he's nowhere near the top of the list. No disrespect intended to you or him.

I put Mccoy right up there Berry

Are you young and don't remember watching Eric Berry?

Cause you're so off base here. McCoy is amazing but in college Eric Berry was arguably the best DB of all-time. He was a combination of Ed Reed and Brian Dawkins in college. The best pass defender and the best hitter all in one. He was close to the all-time SEC record for interception return yards as well as being the most feared hitter in the league. If he played on better teams he would be talked about in the same vein as Bo Jackson and Hershel Walker when it comes to legendary SEC players.

Berry and McCoy play 2 entirely different positions

Doesn't matter. Reggie White and John Henderson played two different positions and anyone who tries to claim Henderson was better than Reggie would be insane.

Reggie White and Eric Berry are on a different level from any other defensive players to ever play at Tennessee. They are on a different level plain and simple.
