Jim Tressel (merged)

The article forgot to mention JT could not be a part of fall practice or the entire month of bowl prep leading up to the possible bowl game. Fall practice is how many weeks? Plus the 1st 5 game weeks and the month of bowl practice. Why have a head coach at all? :eek:lol:

When your on probation, hiring a coach with current NCAA issues is much worse than hiring a coach who messed up and got caught cheating. Give me BP over JT any day as far as hiring a blemished coach. The big issue I have with the JT option is noone knows what the NCAA could do if it wanted to make an example of the school who hired a coach with a show cause. There is a reason no school has ever done it. UT being the 1st to give it a go would not be ideal with where we are today. JMO

I also forgot to mention that HE ALREADY PAID HIS PENALTY....VOLUNTARILY. Last year, when the Colts hired him as an assistant.

That's real money and a real job he forfeited as a good faith gesture. 6 games. Even though he was not bound to do so outside the NCAA confines. If Hart is interested, all he has to do is simply ask....the NCAA COI to waive or reduce the required penalty.

We'd be lucky to get Tressel.

As things continue to evolve, I think he could get us back to Top 10 as quickly as anyone. I wanted Gruden or Stoops or Gundy. If those are absolute closed doors, then I would be pretty supportive of this hire.

Are a lot of the posters kin to Tressel or something? He would be BAD,BAD, NEWS. He never could beat an SEC team when he was at Ohio State. Plus, we need to stay far, far, far, away from coaches with NCAA baggage. Tennessee is in NCAA trouble now, thanks to Lane Kiffin. So, we are already on the NCAA radar. If it comes down to hiring Tressel or the football program dying a slow death, I believe Tennessee would have a better chance for success if we died a slow death and just started over.

Great coach but at the end of his game just like Phil

Think under 50

Well, you just excluded everyone including Charlie Strong, which is not my candidate anyway.

Tressel is younger than Dave Hart who officially is making the hire.

The older I get, the more reasons I see that experience is golden. I am not "focused" on just one candidate, but Tressel has an awful lot to offer a program in the shape we are in.

Not going to happen

He is 1-2 against the SEC in BCS Bowls, within the past decade. :loco: Get your facts straight before letting that shiz come out.

So, by you "Can't beat an SEC team" boneheads' logic, Belichick with the Patriots can't compete in the NFL cause he's 0-2 against the Giants, in the Superbowl, eh? Man, that's funny, right there. I don't care who you are.

Are you saying no school should ever give Pearl another chance? Not being smart, just wondering...
No. Just that the prospects for hiring them are totally different. Pearl is straddled with 3yrs recruiting restrictions among other penalties. Tressel's show cause is a virtual slap on the wrist comparatively. Yet folks here act like it's a death penalty.

That's kind of what I thought. Tressel's stuff really isn't all that bad considering we are not projected to have a championship season next year anyway. The schedule will be tough, several losses, etc. will make for some difficulty in making a decent bowl game next year, so Tennessee would have less to lose than some schools would anyway.

I'm sure Tressel would hire/bring a good OC/DC who can handle things while he sits out those 5 games (or less). There is no bowl ban for the team. No recruiting restrictions. The NCAA just wants to make sure that the coach doesn't duck the penalties by simply stepping down and getting hired elsewhere.

Basically, the 5 game sanction is just a coach-only penalty. If Tennessee can deal with a little bad PR from some in the media, initially and 5 games, then it would have one of the top 3 Head Coaches in the business right now. There is no NCAA Boogie Man waiting around the corner. No NCAA double-agents spying on him. He just has to do his "Time Out" and go back to class, as it were. This whole thing is WAY overblown, and it's why we can cut through all the BS, and get a steal.

I believe this could be a pretty nice solution for the Vols.

The 5 game ban would not discourage me at all. I mean, next season is a wash anyway with whomever we get as HC. Even Saban only had 6 wins his first season at Alabama. Tressel would be a decent substitution for Gruden IMO.

There is a degree of risk with any of them, but I agree, the upside is enticing.

I thought that Tressell had the "show cause" issue at this time. If so do we want to get under that cloud?

Do any of seriously believe Jim Tressel will be successful on the recruiting trails of Tennessee, Bama, Georgia, North/South Carolina, and Florida? GMAFreakinB!
