Jimmy Dykes, "CCM One of Best Coaches in Game"

This.

I have been critical of CCM and how our team has played. I am not in any camp that claims he should be fired, that is ridiculous. I think the team is playing much better due to CCM making adjustments AND the actual players taking charge. The fact is this roster is not loaded with offensive talent, outside of Golden, McCrae, and Stokes. If not for some unfortunate losses to Georgetown, Virginia, Alabama, Memphis , and Georgia this season would be much different. We still have a lot of basketball left and could make a push for the dance!
Go Vols!

The addition of Hubbs and Maymon along with everyone else having one more year experience
(CCM included) will give the team a huge boost next year. Should be a good year..

Yeah...no tourney next year and it'll be impossible to defend him..

Sounds like Jimmy is giving Martin some much deserved on ball action but like most of his proclamations, he's gone overboard with the hyperbole. There's no justifiable reason some of these changes shouldn't have been implemented back in January.

I still have concerns about our defense. The wisdom of McBee vs our opponents PG man-2-man. He's forever chasing his guy around the court, 3-steps behind. And Stokes still doesn't seem to understand how to hedge the dribbler off a screen. His recovery is slow. With so many guys on the bench that can't shoot a jumper, you'd think at least one of them could be a Josh Bone or Steven Pearl type defender.

On the plus side at least they're watchable now, whereas the first 2/3rds of the season was dreadful basketball. I DVR the game, fastforward through the commercials, and skip forward 5-min at a time when the team goes on a turnover binge or forgets how to score for 7-8mins. It means my evening isn't ruined if we have a Georgia type brain fart.

I am sure everyone, included the players, are glad you find OUR team to be watchable now. You are the long time, thick and thin, no matter what kinda fan arent ya???

Nope. I actually graduated from UT but unlike you my life doesn't revolve around 18-22yr olds playing poor basketball. It's not a sin to wish that your school has success while you tend to more enjoyable things like family, friends, and other interests. Life is too short.

But nice try. :hi:

I actually like Dykes. I think he's one of the few good ones ESPN has.

Maybe that's just me.

I think the jury is still out on Martin. I'm going to wait until the end of next season to judge him. You can already see tendencies and things before then obviously, but I'm giving him until the end of next year. He has made changes he needed to this year. He has also had to deal with injuries to key players. All of that has to be taken into consideration.

No need to judge him next season, if he finishes this season.
Win out and win 2 in the dance and next year is icing on the cake.
Not saying it will happen, but if it should, Martin has proven himself as far as I'm concerned.

Only dipsh"ts in this fan base can refuse to acknowledge compliments given to CCM.

Lose.....all his fault.

Win.....had very little to do with it.

Pessimism abounds here.

When we hired Martin last year I thought we were getting a very good coach. Nothing has happened since then to change my view.

Dykes is doing an interview on WNML. Said that Cuonzo is one of the best coaches in the game. Supported his statement by saying that the offensive struggles the Vols experienced earlier this season were alleviated by the switch to a four-guard line up and said that many coaches would've been able to identify the problem but wouldn't have been able to fix it. Says only good coaches could've fixed a situation like that.

What do you say?

I say.....what took him so freakin long !!!?
Better late than never though !!!

I say that he is improving but not that great......

Have y'all forgotten last seasons Austin Peay game? What about the M.T.S.U. game? How about the College of Charleston game????

We lost all three of those games and shouldn't have.... We were out played....

Outplayed is one thing, outcoached is another. Doesn't matter who he puts on the floor if they aren't gonna try. He doesn't shoot, dribble, or run the floor. The players do. He can draw up plays, but if they do't execute.. it doesn't matter... true?:salute:

Disagree. Dykes is probably the most knowledgeable commentator ESPN has going. He likes to hear himself talk, and I sometimes get the sense he'd rather be coaching, but he has an immense understanding of the game. He and Nessler are by far my favorite crew, even if Dykes' commentary gets on my nerves a little bit (especially when he is calling UK games).

I cannot recall Dykes being critical of any coach or player, never offers any observation on different offense or defense choices, only the obvious. He is Dick Vitale light, all rah rah rah and no substance....Nessler is a real Pro....

I strongly disagree. In almost every broadcast, he draws up plays on a whiteboard or telestrator, diagrams them and explains them and their importance. He offers unbiased opinion, especially of officiating. He is critical when necessary. I have witnessed it myself. He will say when a player takes a bad shot, makes a bad decision, etc. He will critique a player's strengths and weaknesses. Same with coaches.

Feel free to disagree, but I have personally witnessed the antithesis to every one of your criticisms. You don't have to like him. We all have different preferences.
