JJJ nears top 10 career rebounding...

Not far off. It's is a great accomplishment but it does need a little context.
Exactly, the context is he has had an injury plagued career and still hasn’t played nearly as many games as you suggested he has in 5 years, and some of those games were limited minutes. Hopefully JJJ gets to 142.

Yeah, my bad. 213 is impossible even for a 5 year guy. Got it from ESPN. Still, JJJ’s tbh average is barley below Chism and he’s played fewer games in 5 years and Chism did in 4. The point is still valid.

ESPN hates us.

It seems like when TN wins the huge, close games JJJ is usually grabbing the critical late rebound or making a great defensive play. He just doesn’t have the late, game winning made basket. But I think he’s helping finish off teams with late free throws.

He made several plays in the last minute or two at Bama.

He played fewer games in 5 seasons than Chism played in 4.
its really weird depending on what site you look up Chism played anywhere from 134-213 games and got between 925 and 1320 rebounds lol
UT official site has him at 142 games played and 930 ESPN has him at 213 games played and 1320 rebounds other sites have all kind of numbers in between

Cant blame chism for beating healthy for 4 years or blame JJJ for having some injuries and covid super senior. I am just saying the rebounds thing is kind of a silly thing. JJJ is so much more than that.

Can we all just admit that comparing stats between decades can be problematic? A lot of school career record numbers got changed massively in the past 3 years because of super seniors.

none of that changes the fact that JJJ is and should be remembered as an all-time great.

Yeah, even two players that played the exact number of games in different eras of basketball are almost impossible to compare. The game changes too much.

The distance of the 3 point line being a big one I’ve thought about recently. Lofton and Houston’s numbers are gaudy. But they also shot with a much shorter line compared to modern players.

I'll admit JJJ has not lived up to his 5 star hype but he has been an excellent contributor to some of the best basketball teams we have had at UT in my lifetime. He is also the highest character type guy you will ever find. An asset to the University in many ways.

Also from 1967 till 1976 the dunk was outlawed in college and high school. 3 pointers didn't exist across the whole NCAA until 1986 it was moved back one foot in 19'9" to 20'9" in 2008 and then in I think 2020 to the current 22' 1.75". Blocks were first recorded in 73-74. And the way assists are awarded is as controversial as tackles in football. Stats can really translate directly over the course of a season or three because rules and interpretations change so much.

JJJ is a definite VFL but, not to be a hater there will be an asterisk involved. All of those guys did this in 3-4 played seasons. JJJ has played 5 seasons. J/S

Facts ? LOL. And you are 100% correct. Just like Pistol Pete played 3 seasons with no 3 point goals. All records are subject to the realism that first; you must make the playing field even.

Josiah Jordan James is now only 2 rebounds away from tying Vol great Isiah Victor for 10th all time.

2.) Bernard King - 1004
3.) Dyron Nix - 944
4.) Carl Widseth - 937
5.) Wayne Chism - 930
6.) Reggie Johnson - 920
7.) Vincent Yarbrough - 862
8.) Jarnell Stokes - 836

I respectfully disagree. I would take the 5 years we got from JJJ over any one-and-done we have ever had. Without a second thought. He came here and was the centerpiece of a culture of winning, family, and brotherhood. Take the 5 years that JJJ played for UT name another 5 year stretch this team was better? Pearl had a 6 year stretch so it's arguable. But Since JJJ has been here this has felt different. These guys want to be here, they play for each other, they just want to win. Santi and JJJ could both be averaging more points taking more shots.. But, they don't because they can focus on doing other things that contribute to winning even if it does not make them look the best in box scores.

Theres like 2 dudes on that list I seriously had to google. Talk about different era's
number 1 and 4 played back to back in the early to late 50's weren't they still using peach baskets?
number 4 was a 6'4" 180 lb center talk about a different game (early 50's)
and Rob Jones I do not remember at all.... I remember Nix slightly because interestingly they both played during the period when I started following sports in general. I remember Dyron's name in the box scores I always thought they misspelled his name so it stuck in my head.

Rob Jones was a great player at Austin-East. About a 6’9” center.

#4, Carl Widseth, was also the all-time career scoring leader until Grunfeld and King passed him. Rob Jones was a local product from Austin-East High School.

Seriously man imagine Keon Johnson trying to play center. Just wrapping my head around it blows my mind. the 1954 roster had 2 guys taller than 6'4 the tallest guy on the team was 6'6......Thats like a JV high school team in a small town. No wonder Wilt was getting 7000 rebounds a game. It reminds me of the video of Cam Newton getting jumped by 5 guys and me feeling sorry for the 5 guys.

BTW, here's the top ten single game rebound records:

1Herb Neff361951–52Georgia Tech
2Gene Tormohlen311956–57Ole Miss
3Gene Tormohlen281958–59Michigan
4Gene Tormohlen271956–57Arizona
Herb Neff271951–52Mississippi State
6Gene Tormohlen261958–59Georgia Tech
7Gene Tormohlen251958–59Wyoming
Gene Tormohlen251958–59Wyoming
Gene Tormohlen251958–59Vanderbilt
10Gene Tormohlen241957–58Florida
I mean he was 6'8 in a league of midgets? He was the direct replacement for the 6'4 guy... so we went from Barkley on a diet to Rodman with vitiligo? Gene Bumper Tormholens tallest teammate ever at UT was 6'6...and we all know that back then heights were more grossly exaggerated than now. I was looking and its like seeing a WNBA roster in fact they are bigger.

Doug Ashworth was 6'6" on his toes. In fact, Doug himself told me he was barely 6'5" when they listed him at 6'6".

all I can say is that he's among my all-time favorite Vols, battling through way too many injuries and hanging w/ the univeersity when others might have quit. I wish him the best, wherever life takes. A VFL who weathered too much criticism. Doubt he's a bit concerned with his place on the rebound ;list

He's been a true leader and a rare team player
