Don't think he was that tall, but anyway, was pretty decent at UT. Couldn't play for UT now, unless he walked on

6’7”. Started every game in 1984-85 and 1985-86. And 30 of 35 in his sophomore year (1983-84).

He was part of the NIT team that made it to their Final 4 in 1985. Lost to Knight’s IU team in the semis. Whupped up on Louisville in the consolation game at MSG.

The good ole days when UT would have accepted an NIT invite.
All jokes aside the NIT used to have some meaning until like the late 90's now it's the invite no one wants. I think that sucks.

Oh I remember beating Virginia in Knoxville leading to the trip to MSG. Michael Brooks came back after being academically ineligible the previous season and ran the point. He had played point some during his first 3 years, but mostly right wing. DeVoe didn't always coach to his players' strengths. His way was the only way, but of course, he had learned and coached under Knight

Well, they were bubble NCAA teams 84-87. DeVoe got them back to the NCAA in 88, but the Vols got beat by a mid-major and DeVoe got fired. Then Dickey decided to fack our basketball program

The 1985 NIT finals had an impressive group. UCLA, Indiana, and Louisville. When those teams were the blue bloods of that era.

1989. West Virginia blew TN out of the NCAAT. They only lost once in the A-10 that year and finished 17th in the AP. Kind of weird that they fired Devoe after getting back to the NCAAT and was on an uptrend after a couple of loosing seasons. But the Legions were tired of him and he wasn’t adapting well to the era when disciplined basketball was in decline. He couldn’t recruit very well because it wasn’t fun to play in his program.

I respectfully disagree. I would take the 5 years we got from JJJ over any one-and-done we have ever had. Without a second thought. He came here and was the centerpiece of a culture of winning, family, and brotherhood. Take the 5 years that JJJ played for UT name another 5 year stretch this team was better? Pearl had a 6 year stretch so it's arguable. But Since JJJ has been here this has felt different. These guys want to be here, they play for each other, they just want to win. Santi and JJJ could both be averaging more points taking more shots.. But, they don't because they can focus on doing other things that contribute to winning even if it does not make them look the best in box scores.
I would also take JJJ over any one and done we have had. His impact has been huge. Not sure where you got anything other than that from my post.

Yep. Got the year wrong. On another note, how pitiful was Buzz with the talent he inherited? He likely inherited the best talent of any coach in my lifetime. Michael thought Kwame Brown was great too😉

The didn't live up to the hype part....I think he gave more than we could have ever expected it just didn't always show up in the box score. again that's the respectful part. I get you were not hating I just kinda dislike the whole hype train star gazing seems to create.
