It's like baseball hitters, when in a slump you move them down the line up. He either works out of the slump or he finds himself watching from the dugout.
The difference here, a hitter keeps swinging the bat trying to work it out. He doesn't keep handing his bat to another player for production.
JJJ needs to be more aggressive on offense, take it to the rim. Draw the foul. Keep putting it up from the perimeter.
Stop watching the DK show.

Went from our most consistent players those first 12 games. To our worst player in these last 9. Like a switch got turned off on him
It's really strange. And whatever may be going on has been kept tight-lipped. I know he's had a wrap on his hand. But yeah, you'd look at that sharp cutoff in his game log and think you were looking at two different players, and it shows up on the court, as well. He was driving the basket like never before earlier this year, getting to the FT line, and still playing great defense. He's just turned into a shell of that player we saw in November and December.

If he's sick or injured why not turn to Mashack or one of the youngsters? Are they that unprepared at this point? Are they such a "project" that we can't expect much of anything the first 2 years in the program? Know Barnes wants "his kind" of recruit, but if we get guys who take that long to be ready, it's no wonder we have no bench and late season fades. Might be that Barnes will need to have a bigger presence in the portal than some might think?

JJJ has always been a beta...That's most of his issue.

Wonder if it’s a bruised ego?

Mashack hasn't scored in two straight games, either. Mashack has 27 points in SEC play. JJJ has 22. Both are great defenders and reserved/low-impact offensive players. They are quite similar with JJJ having proven a little more offensively and Mashack potentially having a slightly higher upside. It feels like you could draw their names out of a hat from game to game as to who was going to play more, and you'd probably get similar results.

As for the younger guys, I don't know that any of them have shown a greater ability to make an impact in what action they have gotten. What we don't see is what they show in practice.

All fair questions that we aren't likely to ever know the full answers to.

One thing to keep in mind. Remember when Chris Lofton production trailed off and folks started questioning his desire, has he peaked etc
Turned out he was dealing with a cancer issue.
✌️
He’s definitely not the same player now as opposed to the first several games which begs the question of is he hurt or trying to manage through something?
I’ve noticed his form shooting now and it looks flat and almost like he is aiming where as before he had more arc, follow through, and his legs were more active on jumpers. It’s also like that on the shot at the elbow where he was really effective earlier. I like JJJ and hope he gets this figured out soon because how much we are disappointed in his performance, I’m sure he is even more.

I played at Memphis State in 1972 when we went to the final game against UCLA and I will tell you that when a player passes up wide open shots there is a problem.. I became a vol fan because my kids went to UT and I have turned from a VOL hater to a VOL fan. The complimentary players are killing TN.. They are scared to shoot and they need to start being an integral part of this offense. JJJ was previously hitting those jumpers from the free throw line, but now he wont even shoot them. TN will not win on just DK even though he is great. Complimentary players mean so much. Please play Maschack and Dillione more. Go VOLS

In order for this Tenn team to get to the Final Four JJJ & Vescovi have to be contributing on a consistent basis. Knecht can drop a 50 piece and this team could still lose. I just don't have faith this team can go on a streak and win 6 games straight in the Dance. Trust me, I want to be wrong.

I defended JJJ from the perpetual haters earlier this year and called him perhaps our most consistent player thru the first 12 games. I'd stand by that, today.

But since the turn of the year, he's been awful. I don't know what happened, but if you go and look at his game log, there is a stark difference in his first 12 games and his last 9 games.

Since 1/1/24...
12-45 from the field, 26.7%
2-18 from 3, 11.1%
4-5 from the FT line, 80%

Just brutal. He's got to be better. Got to find a way to bring some offensive production. Got to get to the line.

The worst stat of all of those is 5 free throws. Playing 30 plus minutes a game at the 4 with his athletecism and yet he attempts less than one FT per game. That's beyond pathetic.

Unfortunately I think JJJ is a liability at this point. You can bring in a lot of guys that would give you toughness on defense. The type of play you've seen can get you knocked out of a tournament. I just don't know what is going on but we've seen it for 5 years.

There is no excuse for the lose last night. It gives me 2022 football beatdown in Columbia vibes. Maybe not the same thing but considering we were at home and couldn't score more than 59 points is inexcusable.

At that point I just can't see a deep run in the tournament with basically one offensive player and every team knows it.

We need JJJ to play at a higher level... Maybe coming off the bench can be a spark and a reset for him to get out of whatever funk he is in

They stated last night that they are trying to get Santi to shoot as much as he did last year. If they are telling Santi that, then it is reasonable to assume they are pushing all those guys to shoot more. We need them all to be just a little more selfish and aggressive. DK would say the same thing.

Follow me on this...do you think because it's rare that you see such a prolific scorer like we have in Knecht that some of the guys are a little timid or intimidated to shoot? I just can't understand how JJJ only gets off 3 shots. However, I think Santi tries to be a Swiss army knife and at least he's getting double figures but yes we could use more.

I am sure Dalton would love the rest of his players to be great role players. When I played at Memphis State in 1972 Larry Finch, Ronnie Robinson, and Larry Kenon were great players but when a complimentary player was open he had to have confidence to knock down the open shot. JJJ, Aidoo, ZZZ, Mashack, Gainey have to step up and be those guys. If they dont then TN will not go far on just Dalton K. This is their chance and I hope they dont blow it. I wish that Barnes would play some of the young players or he is going to lose some of them in the portal. If Barnes doesnt figure this one out, then he is part of the problem too. Go VOLS

Knecht is easily picking up the slack for JJJ’s offense. Other than that, JJJ is a great defender and rebounder. I think we suffer on defense when he’s out.

Mashack is one of the best defensive players I have seen in a long time. His shooting form from outside looks so good and improved. This could be a special team but they could also be a bust

Because Dalton is so good the rest of the guys will get open shots. Take them with confidence. JJJ has great form on his shot. I hope they are not looking over their shoulders at Barnes because he loves to yell at his players. I am not a big fan of that.
