Really? Not even in the same ball park closeMilton had the same problem that Tee Martin had - he followed one of the best in the sport. As such, neither will ever be good enough in the eyes of most. Milton was still good and better than many of those who have played QB in the past, but many fans will never get beyond the comparison to Hooker.
Martin overcame the comparison with Manning with the National Championship. Unfortunately for Milton that or making the SEC title game was the only way some would recognize him. Sad but true. Nico, not playing this year, saved himself from that comparison. He should tell Joe, Thank You.
From what he did for the team, Dobbs is still it for me though.
I saw a few good run moves to elude. The real problem was, he wouldn’t run when he should have.Joe was solid for us. A lot better than folks want to admit. For as much as people complained about his accuracy, he completed 64% if his passes. And that's with at least a dozen or more easy drops this year (and at least 4-5 of those were walk in TDs)
IMO, the main element we were lacking on offense that we saw a lot of last year are the designed QB runs and Hooker's ability to turn a negative play into a big gain. Hooker was able to make so many amazing plays with his legs last year. While Joe has good straight line speed, but his acceleration always seemed lacking on those designed QB runs. And he has zero agility. Never, ever makes guys miss.
Regardless what your expectations were, this was always going to be a bridge year to Nico. I'm thankful we had an experienced leader like Milton to bridge the gap. He could have easily transferred out after losing his job to Hooker 2 years ago. Thanks Joe for giving your all to TN.
I think that's right. Frankly, I don't know how many losses he could have saved us by making more plays, but the defense clearly could have been helped if we had converted 3rd downs at something closer to 40%+ rather than 30%.I don't think the issue so many have with Joe is what he did, but what he didn't do.
…which is crazy because that’s usually the exact opposite of what they have to coach QBs to do. His first instinct is to hold the ball and stand in the pocket. The only things that rubbed me the wrong way about Joe was at times he seemed hellbent on not running when it was there. It’s like he wanted to keep rolling out of the pocket and make a throw to someone to just to impress scouts or something.
This is Euphoric Recall.
I don't think the issue so many have with Joe is what he did, but what he didn't do. We're also comparing him to some of the worst QB's this program ever had and saying, "See, he's not that bad."
Individual stats, it was better than any individual year Tee Martin had, yet because Martin had a defense and consistent RBs that bolstered the wins, everyone gives him a break.
We didn’t stand a chance against MissouriGet out of here with those facts!!!
Nobody wants facts people just want to bitch!!
If Nico doesn’t win a Natty next year people will lose their damn minds! “ we haz 5 star we shud win”
With that said, we should have beaten UF and Mizzou…….GA and AL are just too deep right now.
Stats aren't the problem. Go back and watch the Vandy game and there's a single play that shows a big Milton problem.
He moved around in the pocket at really an elite level on that play. He then threw deep down the sideline into double coverage resulting in 4th down. On the replay.... you can clearly see a wide open receiver on the same sideline in his field of vision that would have caught the ball for a 1st down.
Milton just leaves too many plays on the field.
This is how Milton compared to past UT QBs since 2004. And he still has another game remaining. As much hate as he got, he really is a great QB (statistically).
Added through 1995 just for fun.

I completely agree with you. It’s just like how so many Vol fans say the following, “Clausen beat UF in the swamp twice.” That’s suck a joke. Look at his stats for those games. In 2001 he passed for 168 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs. In 2003 he threw for 235 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Clausen didn’t beat UF twice. Vol fans need to stop with the oh this QB beat this team r this QB couldn’t beat that team.I realize that but he is the last QB to get us a National Championship. While I can agree with QB as being one of the more important roles on the team - we can have the greatest QB of all time (insert Manning here) and someone like Hendon Hooker and still not win a championship. It takes a team and a lot of luck.
I think many just want someone to blame, when we forget football is a team sport.
