John Bolton: Swamp Creature

Yep. He did say that and he joined the Guard after completing his BA at Yale. As was a legal policy. And he publicly owned his rationale. He didn’t run to Canada, he wasn’t a draft dodger as you were trying to imply.
What gets me is that the people criticizing Bolton and Trump for not going to Vietnam are a bunch of liberals who would have been out protesting, burning their draft cards, and would have gone to Canada.

He said he didn't want to die over there, and have Ted Kennedy give the land back to the enemy later.

I know but he did confirm the statement. And to your other post most anybody who could get a valid deferral was doing so at that time. And I don’t blame them.

He didn’t “draft dodge”. He joined the guard. That was allowable. He didn’t refuse to answer a call to his lottery number which is exactly the inference that was made.

The criticism is based on their hypocrisy. They're all pro war now, but when given the chance to serve they weaseled out. But if the person is anti-war now, there's no hypocrisy if they were anti-war in the Vietnam era.

Nope. I really don’t think it does.

And I’m also not a fan of Devos or Carson. On Bolton I’m glad he didn’t wind up at State. In this role I’m not certain he can’t be effective (I preferred McMaster). But you guys simply won’t even allow an appointment without a huge ***** fest.

The butt hurt over Haspel to the CIA is absolutely ridiculous and a slander campaign.

No way Bolton gets senate approval if he was nominated for secretary of state.

So...

There's hypocrisy on both sides of this debate?

I believe that would have been a poor appointment. However I don’t see anything as compelling here other than he’s a hardass and aggressive. Frankly on intelligence I don’t think that’s a bad thing and he cannot act alone or at the same level of power that he could have as SoS

Sorry, not following. If a peacenik was anti-war in the 1970s and is anti-war now, where's the hypocrisy?

If a peace-nik burned his draft card and ignored his call up he should have gone to jail and not have a say.

If instead you take the path Bolton did there is no disqualifier even though we know you guys really really want there to be one!

You really think a double Yale grad was going to join the national guard in 1970 for any reason other than avoiding going to Vietnam?

I was in college in 1970. I would give you a crisp $100 bill for every person that you could find on the U.T. campus at that time who wanted to go serve in Vietnam.

How many armed conflicts did Bill Clinton get us involved in while he was President? Did he not protest against the Vietnam War and evade the draft?

No, hypocrisy goes on both sides of this issue.

The hypocrisy is that you are criticizing him for something you would have done yourself, if you were in his shoes.

That's not the definition of a hypocrite. A hypocrite is one who professes X but then does not act in a manner consistent with what X requires.

Outside of Yugoslavia--to which no ground troops were committed--I can't really recall anything of significance.

You're just jealous you can't grow a mustache like his.

Nah. My wife doesn't care for facial hair. Growing it therefore isn't worth it. That said, it would likely take me a year or more to grow a stache like his!
