John Brice - Rick Barnes Extended, $5.9 Million

Like I said, you seem to want to point to a team having 1 good year/run and infer it means something…South Carolina did just that, what’s it mean?

You can try to downplay the 4 year run but it ranks Top 10 nationally in that span, and it seems likely if we include this upcoming year and go to 5 seasons that we will be in even more elite company.

I guarantee there are more than 10 schools that would take their run over ours without blinking twice. There is two in the SEC! I know you don’t want this to be true, but nobody hangs banner for 30 win seasons. Nobody hangs banner for 20+ wins 3/4 years! Nobody hangs banners for “top ten in regular season wins over the last five years!”

You generally want to keep your coach on a 5 yr running deal. It gives prospects an indication that the institution is committed to the coach and vice-versa thru the recruit's career, even though it is usually only surface-level confidence, especially against the coach leaving.
The number of quotes by players newly signed and their parents point to what they feel is a highly valued coach. Fans can moan and complain, but the proof is in the recruiting pudding. I’m more than happy and not surprised whatsoever.

Isn’t a banner just a piece of fabric? Is there a standard for hanging banners? Seems like they go up for NCAA invites, conference champions, NITs, player numbers, broadcaster names… basically anything that a team wants to decorate with. Even black curtains.

A banner means (usually) you’ve accomplished something. It’s tangible. It’s an accomplishment. Unfortunately we (other schools too) hang banners for dumb reasons (anything NIT related for example).

I like titles. I like advancing in tournaments. I like postseason success more than regular season, like most fans. Some people apparently don’t. I guess it’s just how you want to enjoy your fanhood.

It’s also nice to be the #1 team in the country for a month. A natty is good timing at holding on to the number one spot.

Some people understand that you have to be in the mix to be at the top on the last day. Having a great program is part of the process. Winning a lot of games is a really good way to determine when a program is doing great. The NCAAT is single elimination and is a flawed system to determine which one program is the best one..

There can be 5 great programs, but it is mathematically impossible for all 5 to be in the Final Four.

Because you have a completely different opinion than I do about success in college basketball. You think it’s all regular season and postseason doesn’t really matters. I infer differently. I really don’t care about a 30 win season when there isn’t a conference title or a E8/F4 run or when we keep getting high seeds in the NCAAT but double digit seeds keep beating us early. And it’s been a Barnes staple he isn’t a good tournament coach. We can argue all day about it but unless we are hanging banners then I don’t really care too much about what we do in the regular season. There’s a postseason ceiling with Barnes and those regular seasons are cool but overall it’s gonna leave you disappointed at the end of the year
Barnes has as many Final Four’s in his career as just about everyone of the programs you listed….

Yea, I actually pretty much guarantee South Carolina would trade with us lol.

Honestly who cares between R32/S16? S16/E8? Is 1 more win in the NCAAT some monumental accomplishment unless it’s reaching a F4 or winning it all?

You get to make more things from pieces of fabric with each additional win.

If every school based their success off Tournament Titles, there would be A LOT of unemployed basketball coaches out there.

To say Barnes career at Tennessee isn’t impressive is just being ridiculous.

I guess Jerry Green was impressive as well

Where did I bring up South Carolina? Would Texas Tech or Baylor trade with us? No.

Well I know you ignore the postseason so here is how it goes. When you reach the postseason or enter a tournament, the farther you go the better. It’s called advancing or moving on. The goal is to advance as far as you can. So yes it is a difference when you advance farther in a tournament

But how does 2 tourneys compare to 3? 1 to 3? If you’re saying South Carolina isn’t better is it because 1 isn’t enough to offset 3? And Texas Tech and Baylor are 2 teams I listed originally that made my list.

Which team had the better year in the NBA West, Utah or the Clippers ? Utah had the best record in the NBA but lost to the 4th or 5th place Clippers, without their best player. Plus, the Clippers were 2 wins from The Finals. Imo, the Clippers had the better season. Basketball is a playoff or Tournament sport. I love Barnes and the Vols, but to have a great season, u have to win something. A share of the SEC regular season championship was a successful season and making the Sweet 16, while being ranked #1 for a month was, also. But, I would trade both for a Final Four, in a NY minute

The NBA and NCAA post seasons aren’t comparable. Best of 7 eliminates most of the fluky outcomes. Single elimination (with very flawed officiating) does not.

Agree. UT got screwed against Purdue. But still, who had the better season ? Clippers didn't really win sh!t and Utah had the best record in the NBA.

Edit: that was weird, I definitely quoted TGO or meant to

Not really an apples to apples comparison. A 7-game series is a much better determination of team success than a single game, which can be fluky and ruin an otherwise good season.
