Billy Clyde is a basketball coach. He wants back in immediately. That said, he'll make sure he finds an employer that is looking for a basketball coach and not a carnival barker. His preference would obviously be to return to Texas, but I don't think he'd pass on a good job elsewhere waiting for something in the Lone Star State to open.
You know good and well that the '08-'09 Georgia Bulldogs and Arkansas Razorbacks are far tougher to attack properly than the '96-'97 Chicago Bulls or Indiana Pacers.I guess game-planning for Scotty Hopson, Nick Calathes, and Devan Downey is more intimidating than preparing for Michael Jordan, Grant Hill, Pat Ewing, Glen Rice, and Allen Iverson.
If Calipari leaves, it will have significant ramifications on both the immediate and distant future of Memphis basketball.
A source close to the team said as many as three current players including Wesley Witherspoon, Roburt Sallie and Angel Garcia may strongly consider transferring from Memphis if Calipari accepts the Kentucky job.
Its also unlikely there would be much of a recruiting class left for Caliparis successor.
Carol Dennis, the mother of University of Memphis recruit Nolan Dennis, told The Commercial Appeal Monday that the letter-of-intent her son signed last fall contains an addendum that would allow him to follow Calipari to another school.
All four players who signed with Memphis in the fall have the same unconditional release in their letters.
This makes me wonder if Cal has been thinking about leaving for a while now.
From what I understand, most LOIs these days have a release clause tied to the coach - especially in basketball.
And make no mistake - Memphis is purely a basketball school thanks to John. The kids he is signing didn't grow up wanting to play for the Tigers. John is a hell of a recruiter and sold these guys on playing for him - not the University of Memphis. Thus, if John is gone, they are too.
