John Jancek???

As fas as some of the starters on defense goes, I appreciate their effort and hard work especially through coaching changes. Is there a way that some of the players have actually regressed in their quality of play? How can they look so good and promising as freshman to end up looking slower and technically worse as juniors?

You play slower when you're thinking as opposed to just knowing the scheme and reacting.

I am surprised with all the genius coaches on this board that nobody has stated this yet.

Hopefully he sees what Richt saw and sends his ass packing

Two potential problems, count:

1 CBJ spending limits on his staff may preclude buying a better DC

2 CBJ may not be able to see what Richt saw, which would indicate a monumental problem for UT

I think you may be giving too much credit to Richt - as far as I can remember reading somewhere (I think UGA folks posted this somewhere) the choice Richt faced was to either get rid of the DC or to be out himself (obviously along with his entire staff). While Richt appears to be a nice loyal guy (like CBJ) this was obviously not much of a choice to be made. I'm sure CBJ has at least another year before he could face something like that (assuming Jancek continues to suck).

Richt had more pressure on him to can Willie.

I think Wilcox did a good job of recruiting players for his system which was bend but do not break and a lot of zone coverages. Jancek is trying to run a man to man defense that puts pressure on the QB and we do not have the players for that style of play.

I think you could say he should adjust his style to what he has on the roster if you wanted to fault him for something.

Wilcox was a terrible recruiter and we are suffering the consequences of his lack of recruiting talent right now. We have few seniors on this defense that provide much besides depth. He is a pretty good coach but you cannot compare the statistics from 09' to this years because this years schedule is much more difficult.

Yes, there is no pressure from anyone to fire Jancek .......outside of message boards

That's typical first step. Then if blowouts continue ticket sales go down and press starts asking same tough questions that have already been raised on forums - which eventually forces AD to step in and someone has to go.
So right now we are probably at least a year away from someone getting canned (or best case scenario we see some real improvements soon and don't have to talk about this any longer).
The exceptions in UT case are always UK and Vandy - loosing to either of those will speed up the process of getting canned (as it should).

I cannot disagree with you. When I go back and look Wilcox started more players recruited by Fulmer and Kiffin than ones he recruited and you are right he was at least a part of recruiting most of the players that are here.

It does not make any sense. Are you really going to make an argument that given all that is know about Wilcox and Jancek in terms of their reputation (not by 'CBJ gets it' crowd but let's say outside of UT forums and on the national level), that it is more likely that Wilcox was a bad recruiter than that Jancek is a weak coach?
If you want to make that argument then was Wilcox also secretly recruiting (badly) for UGA before Jancek got there as part of conspiracy to get him fired by UGA?
Did Texas offer DC job to Wilcox because they wanted a bad recruiter for their defense?

There is no arguing that UT has a talent issue right now and there is no arguing that Jancek did not recruit the players that are starting other than Sutton. I do not care who it was that recruited them but in the end the DC will get the blame just like Jancek is now.

By the way I never said Wilcox was a bad recruiter or coach I only said I could not disagree. If you go back and look I said he did a good job at recruiting players that fit his scheme.

While that is true the question being argued in this thread is lack of what type of talent?
Players or coaches?
I think there is plenty of evidence this year that coaches are just as much to blame as the players (exactly the same as last year).

kick and punt defense was just as horrid - that coach needs walking papers too

That is premature - they have done a very good job most of the year in that area so perhaps this was just a one game underperformance (unlike the defense which is consistently horrible against good teams).

If I had to put a percentage I would say 75% talent and 25 % coaching but that is just my opinion. If we do not start seeing results next year with the talent we have coming in that seems to fit the style Jancek wants to play then that could quickly go to 100% coaching. :)

I can kind of agree with that (decided to be a little nicer to Jancek today ). But these coaches better understand that losing to UK or Vandy will flip that blame percentage to 100% coaching in a heartbeat.

Here is our DC Jancek's comments about the AU game:
»(On linebackers against Auburn)

“There were no issues in terms of the linebackers finding out who had the ball. They executed. They did their job for the most part. There was a couple times, here and there, we maybe slid a little too far inside. Nothing where you said, `Man that’s awful.’ For the most part, we were on point.

Did I watch a different game?

I'm not entirely sure....

It is hard to play LB with a DL in your lap.

One of the guys I am most disappointed in is McCullers. Jones wasn't lying when he said UT's D and season would go as McCullers went. In the last three games, he has consistently had guys under his pads pushing him into the secondary on run plays. The second biggest problem IMO on D is J Smith. I like the guy but he gets whipped on virtually every play. Has he turned a run play back inside all year?

Hood isn't all that talented but the guy is tough, doesn't give ground, and plays his assignment as best he can. You can say the same for Miller and Walls. For the life of me, I cannot understand why the other two mentioned aren't benched in favor of "playing for the future." Those reps could be helping some of the guys who will be back.

Right now... I'd say about 50/50. Next year... more like 25/25/50.

25% experience (lack thereof)
25% talent (starters are more than likely the 2nd and 3rd string now)
50% coaching... IMO, it is just about always that important.

If you are expecting guys coming in brand new to the program... who have not played in the system... to outperform seniors who haven't been in the system but have been in a college level development/S&C program for 3 or 4 years then you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Best hope next year for improvement lies with AJ coming back, Maggitt coming back with a vengence, the current guys in the secondary gelling then getting solid back up, AND... most importantly... great play from Saulsberry, Clark, O'Brien, Carr, Vereen, et al plus some surprise contributors from the new class.

If they end up heavily dependent on '14 signees to start... it is going to be a rougher year than this year on D.

I will not be upset if we see improvement and do not see the same mistakes week after week like we are now. I am also a firm believer that players "playing fast" make up for some of the mistakes we are seeing right now.

I agree 100% with the d-line statement as being key for next season. I believe Maggitt and Reeves-Maybin will be huge for the defense next year as our WILL and SAM LB play has not been very good this year but some of that is on the d-line. I think the key for next year is finding 2 safeties who can play and have that killer instinct like we have had in the past.

Edit: I think when healthy Randolph is a quality safety but he has not been healthy in a while now.

For the love of GOD where do you think they can get worse? Are they are going to give up 1000 yards per game average to good teams instead of 600 or whatever they are doing now? :cray:

As bad as I hate to say it I do not think it can get any worse than the last 3 games.

We are on point to make plays---but the players playing didn't make them...be they super-talented, no talented, no speed, etc. Jancek can't get out there and tackle the guys.

That's just not true. How many times have we seen someone run for 10-15 yards before our first defender gets even close (especially in Auburn game)? As far as tackling - if players are struggling with that aren't coaches supposed to work with them to fix their technique?
