Can't believe someone brought up the question of the shadiest character in sports and nobody mentioned Bear Bryant. Half the NCAA rulebook exists because of him (Probably why Tebow wasn't in Tuscaloosa on a trumpet scholarship) and the yokels treat him like a god, too.

Right. Because I really care what someone with a Unicorn in their avatar thinks about me.

First of all unicorns are magical creatures that are nearly extinct. Secondly, it's not just any unicorn but robocops unicorn. And in closing, go sit on a pineapple.

Not disagreeing, but damn that was harsh.

Not really. I could respond in kind, but it would be a waste of time. First of all, there is no reasoning with people like this. Second of all, I don't want to have to deal with the suspension from the Mods for an argument with someone that in the scheme of things doesn't mean squat.

My neigbor played Golf today with Rollie Massimino and his son Tommy
Rolllie got a call on the course to give a eulogy at Wooden's funeral

On a side note Rollie took 20 bucks off my neighbor

I do think, regardless of Gilbert, that Wooden was a decent person and a good coach (Calipari this year shows that simply getting talent doesn't guarantee anything), whose legacy will be a dichotomy of a good human being with great coaching skills and the blatant character supplying his dynasty behind the scenes as Wooden, essentially, plays see-no-evil.

Was limiting to hoops. Football is an entirely different can of worms with Bryant leading the way. Bryant is football's version of Rupp, only drunker.

He massively overplayed the pious simpleton thing. He was the beneficiary of big time cheating and knew it, but played the choir boy all the time. Clearly he was a good coach and player, but his talent advantage was probably the largest ever in the collegiate game and that was assured by someone else's money.

I see. Of course, Bryant probably learned his trade under Rupp at Kentucky.

Nothing like the attempt at class by a guy bashing a dead hero.

The hagiography over a guy who would never have won anything if it weren't for a mobster's money is sickeningly cloying. I don't care about his cheating; I don't care about John Wooden either way. But all this "greatest coach of all time" crap is ridiculous. When Bobby Knight (who was ten times the coach) dies, ESPN will run an endless series of segments "debating his legacy." But Wooden -- arguably the greatest cheater of all time -- expires and it's like Santa Claus died. Maybe the lesson is that if you live long enough to be old and frail but still publicly visible and "cute," people will ignore anything.
